I just received pics of the "sweet" RRC he just bought. It's completely stripped.

Interior gone.....check
wire harness gone...check
drivetrain leaving...check
removing all rust....check
diesel powerplant...........

Here you go.

The dash had been out at least once, before i owned her, few broken tabs many missing fasteners etc.

The heat/AC wire harness was screwed up, things patched and spliced in several spots, relays bypassed and other spliced in....... It's a fu*king mess. The ENTIRE harness is coming out and a *brand new custom/aftermarket harness installed front to back. Only things I may leave stock are the ABS wires, wires inside the doors themselves and sunroof/dome lights. Only "convenience features" I will loose are the timer for the interior lights (though I could install a timer relay easy enough) and the ABS brakes IF I chose to do away with that.

The motor needs manifold gaskets, y pipe welding, the O2 sensors are dying, the rear main seal is leaking and the AC system needs a revamp/rebuild. Seems easier to yank the motor NOW rather than wait like I was going to do.

The interior will get freshened up big time, the TDI will go in (or the Chebby 6.0 I have, still on the fence there) and the floor pan is getting super sealed up and all new waterproof sound deadening. The rover junk has caused some very minor rust from the inside and needs to be addressed now before its a big issue. Glad I caught it now.

I have no doubt, everything Doug does to this RRC will be top notch work. Besides it's not like it was a showroom perfect stock example of a RRC.

I can't wait to see what he does, his projects are always pretty damn amazing.

Another one bites the dust.

That's funny. So you're telling me that 20 year old modified and hacked wiring, a leaking motor with blown gaskets and the very start of inside floor pan rot are not things that should be FIXED and/or UPGRADED?

I understand the purist approach - but it's a plain jane 1993 RRC that's already been lifted, has an RTE bumper, sliders, resprayed at some point, had OK to good but far from perfect interior.... the list goes on. Yes it's a very nice truck and even given all the "issues" one of the nicest I've seen to date. But it's just a 1993 truck.

In no way do I hack job things. NOT my style, never has been. I build $1/4 to $1 million+ boats for a living... I do things right... and this is exactly why I can't just patch the harness and button it back up with my fingers crossed.

The D2 dash idea may not be your cup of tea and that I can completely understand. However rewiring the truck to be safe, reliable and simpler to work on while not loosing features that make it a luxury truck = win-win to me.

If these trucks were so perfect to begin with why do we modify them? Is yours modified at all?

Sorry if I seem pissy, not upset really I just don't get the argument unless we are talking about a 1 in a million truck or something. This is why I sold the TWR I had - too nice and unique a truck for me to have. :patriot:

I will second Doug's reply, and not because he's a friend but because his quality of work speaks for itself.
Hacker?...I think not.

So Doug,...did you cut the roof off yet to check for rust?:D

Probably not, but I bet even though he has two good engine choices sitting in front of him he's thinking about something else.

I think a GM L33 5.3 aluminum v8 would look nice in there. :)

Ha ha ha - yes my brain has come up with a lot engine choices. Some good some great some not so good. LOL.

I just want something that will work well, I can do 100% correctly that will not have any negative impact on the truck. For instance: I considered while laughing to myself that a friend has a great running rotted out Dodge 3/4 ton with a nice solid reasonable milage 5.9 Cummins 12 valve - but while it's a GREAT motor and would be fun - it would kill the poor RRC and just be too much.

I have a lead on a nice Isuzu 4J 3.0L engine/trans package (like you see on ebay all the time as a "JDM" import) - good friend that I lived with in New Zealand has it and could ship it to me through an importer... not a bad option as they are a solid motor but I'd have to adapt it to the rover t-case and then parts are a pain down the line.

The little VDub just makes sense. Small, light, simple to work on, easy to get parts anywhere in the world (I may take this truck overseas in a couple years if I still have it) and reliable with modest maint. The way I have it set up it's about 200hp and over 300tq with a pretty flat power band and a redline of 5000 rpm. Seems like an ideal power plant. Granted it will be working harder at highway speeds so the MPG may not be as stellar as a Jetta.... but it should be great compared to a V8. Plus you DO NOT do a swap like this for $$ savings.

As for the dash the D2 has a lot going for it, looks in place as it's from a Rover (rather than using something out of a say a BMW or Audi or something) it simply works from a function standpoint and the heater assembly and AC also just simply *work*. And a D1 manual control box will fit the D2 dash. If I could use the D2 climate control without having to swap the BCU i'd do it. In fact I may look into it for fun.

The VW motor would be interesting, especially if you adapt it to a rover transmission, hell you could probably fund the project selling adapters.

Oh and if you do the dash do a complete write up on it, as I and others would be interested

2002 1.9 "ALH" tdi with hybrid VNT 17/22 turbo, transporter nozzles, updated pump, custom intake manifold and very tweaked ECU software from Malone Tuning in Canadialand.

High volume oil pump, bigger custom oil pan with bypass filter set up, and water to air aftercooler. (No room for decent air to air cooler)
