I think some of you guys miss the point that they were trying to roll the truck. That was the whole point of it, to show what would happen with an over-reaction. How many takes do you think it took before they actually got it to roll over?

I agree, after the initial swerve he torqued the wheel over hard hand over hand to correct and did not even make an attempt to recorrect again. Can't say what anyone would do in a panic situation, but his moves seemed intentionally exaggerated.

Atually it's quite common for people to swerve to avoid something, freak out, and over correct. That's why dropping off on to a low shoulder causes accidents, the wheel drops, the person freaks out and jerks the wheel the other direction and the car goes out of control.
This video pretty well simulated swerving and then back to to avoid something else in your path, like maybe a bridge pylon. Or just what people typically do.
If you maintain your cool when things happen odds are you'll come out fine. I know it has for me a number of times.

The moral of the story for this video? Maintain proper following distance.

Really?

I had a deer jump in front of me and I had to do a similar manouver. I left a 25 yard long patch of rubber where the rear wheels locked up.

Scenerio, I drive around corner in slight fog 50mph.
Realize several deer in roadway, slam on brakes
know I am not going to stop in time, release brakes, swerve off shoulder of road on right. Deer life saved by glancing blow, no body damage.

Right shoulder is sloped away from road, choose not to correct too quickly, drive on shoulder until I can get back on road safely.

The whole thing took 2 seconds. Instincts do work in crisis.

The guy in the video wanted to roll the vehicle.

Well, you confirmed what I was saying about keeping your cool, though many peoples' instincts are to immediately try to steer back on the to the road.

I agree, but I also think it was a pretty accurate representation of what often happens in a panic situation.

People trying to deny that a Land Rover will roll at a lower speed than a sedan, given the same actions, are just ignoring reality.

Sure, everyone knows that tall SUV's don't handle that same as sedans. Who the fuck cares? Drive one like an asshole, and roll it like an asshole. I'll bet a Kenworth would do the same thing, maybe all long-haul truckers should now drive performance sedans.

I have hit my share of deer living in the country and given the choice between me and the deer, it is me every time but I will try to avoid them when possible. I don't want them coming through the windshield.

I was sitting stopped at a light and had a deer actually run into the side of my car, the deer hit me !!!!

My father in law was stopped in a line behind a plow and got t-boned by a moose. Its funny cause he saw it coming and there was nothing he could do but hope the moose swerved. I think the car was totalled.

I have dealt with moose when I lived in Seward. They are dangerous and huge but for being so majestic they have the most diminutive feces of any large animal I have encountered. I think they are embarassed by it and therefore have something to prove.

I am moving back to Seward in July, can't wait!

That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard.

I was just talking to my wife and she says I got my stories crossed. My father in law did get t-boned by a moose while standing still. However, insurance fixed the car. It got totalled the SECOND time the same thing happened to my mother in law in the same car (apparently the same exact spot). Unfortunately the neither the moose nor the car survived the second accident.

Sorry for the hijack, but what do you do up in Seward?

On topic: I saw that video a few weeks ago, and yeah, its obvious they tried to flip it, and I know we are all expert professional unfallable drivers, but there is always the risk of an easier rollover accident in our trucks than our cars--but, these are still safe vehicles.

In the bunker
Anyone can put any vehicle wrong-side-up as long as they are:

1) Stupid
2) Drunk
3) Trying to do so

About 20 years ago, I used options 1 & 2 to put my Renault R-10 (not a high-center-of gravity-vehicle) on it's lid trying to avoid a deer. I was travelling at about 50mph (not much faster than Julian). Thank God no other vehicles were on the road; & my buddy was unhurt.

Last time I ever drove on public roads while 2.

I think Julian could have rolled an MGB if he wanted to.

Hijack reply: I lived there in the late 70's when I was in High school. I have always wanted to move back and now we are.

As for employment, I don't have anything lined up yet but have had some good prospects. My background is industrial project development/entrepeneur.

How about independent Land Rover repair shop, what are your thoughts?

As far as I know there aren't really any good indie Rover shops up here and certainly not in Seward. Maybe you could also bring Rovers up from the lower 48 so that some of the more discerning buyers up here (those of us who have been Rover shopping for almost two years) have some options.

Yeah I think Girdwood would be better for a Indie shop but I really want to live in Seward.

What are you looking for?
