rust prevention

I was cruising craigslist looking for anyone dumping parts locally and I found this Disco II and a photo of a bad rust area.

Mine isn't rusting here, but I'm curious if there is a way to prevent rust from happening here? Seems like it would be difficult but I'm looking for any preventative measures, esp now that my rust free Disco is on the East coast instead of out west.

Also, is this a top down rust area or a bottom up?

I've seen water get trapped in the C pillar on a few trucks. So I'd imagine its rusting from the inside out. There is a plug of sorts in the wheel well I think that you could always try and remove to clean it out. or maybe that was just a rust hole in mine.

That's not a picture of a Disco 2, it's a Disco 1. The interior (seats, door panels, seatbelts, etc etc) are a dead giveaway. I haven't personally seen any D2's rusting in that area, but it's fairly common for D1's.

Yes. I have no idea why I fat fingered a II instead of a I. I have a I as well which is why I'm slightly concerned on how it happens and how to prevent it.

I have seen the same on about 3 out of 10 DI's in my area. It seems like water gets into thC pillar from either the roof, or the wheel well. It seems like a lot of the trucks that have rot there either came from the east coast, or the mid west. Although to be fair, I think the magcloride they use on the roads here doesn't do them any favors either. Seen a couple in the junk yard rotted all the way through the pillar.

What are the chances you can move back west? The environment in places like AZ & CA will put other strains on your Disco, but rust won't be one of them.

That sucks. I guess I'll keep an eye on keeping it clean and clear as best I can.

Probably 0 chance I'd ever move to CA. Other locations are always a possibility...

We don't get much rust here in the Carolinas. Probably more than say AZ but definitely less than any body north of us. The '95 DI I've been working on has very little rust some in the rear cargo area and in the front foot wells where the mud flaps attach. All typical stuff and surface rust only. I also found a hand full of stuck bolts. But the rest of the truck was pretty spotless.

There is a ledge inside the fender well where water/snow accumulates and causes erosion. I cured mine by filling it full of foam sealant from home depot. It works.

When you start looking at northern Disco1's. #5 in this picture I would call the apron. But that's just because I'm not a Brit. That's the tell tale part to me. When you peel the front fender off one of these trucks and have a rotted out apron, the truck could still look good but be a bucket of shit. The 99 SD my kid rolled into a corn field looked really nice. But it was a bucket of shit. I didn't realize it till I took the fender off it when I hit a deer. It still looked pretty good 3 years after that but when he rolled it the body came apart in places.
