A local guy here is selling off his Safari Gard rear tire carrier (he want to do something different). I've been looking for a rear tire carrier for my 109, and the price is right on this thing. So I figure I'd go for it (sure, I'd need to modify a wee bit but I understand and accept it).

I was wondering, is there any reason NOT to buy a Safari Gard? I was going to make my own, and I can get this one cheaper than the raw materials for a home made one. Any problems? Issues? I know SG has had a bad rep with some of their other products and I thought I'd ask first.

Thanks.

They get good reviews if you can actually get the parts on time and all together.

Personally not my taste but hey he's giving it away scoop it up...

I wheel with a guy who has one and I personally like it alot. He wheels the crap out of his D90 and it holds up fine. I think most of SG's problems are with customer service, not quality. Just my 2 cents......

I say get it. it works and has storage on it. i second their poor service, but that's not the problem for you. when you are done, you should powdercoat it to match your truck color, that would be cool.

I have a SG carrier and it is great but has a serious design flaw. It uses the LR attachemnt point to the rear door with is essentially worthless. After trying and trying to beef up the system it ripped a hole in my rear door this summer while I was driving down to Cabo.
I'm currently working on a new attachment system that locks to the rear crossmember and provides some support. I can e-mail you some pics when done.

Over all it is a good product and if you can get if for a good prioce go for it but I would not use the back door setup if the truck sees long dirt tracks... it will fail.

Had a similar problem and did a similar fix. I still needed to reinforce the upper right attachment point since it was creating a weak spot there as well. Actually the original rack created the weak spot there. JC Rover in Englewood, CO designed a reinforcement for that point that tied into the roll bar in the right rear corner. It still squeaks and bounces too much, but it's better than the original. My advice would be to avoid the hassle and go with a full rear bumper/tire carrier assembly. In the end, you'll spend the same amount of money. Kaymar (sp?) I believe makes a decent one.

Feel free to give a shout if you have questions about it. 303-304-8118

the SG is a great tire carrier. My friends 110 carries one. Never complained a bit about it. I would say if the price is right go for it.
