Alpine Window Leak

Has anyone delt with leaking alpine windows? I purchased my first LR Discovery, a 1994, as a second vehicle. It's in great shape except for the windows. They leak alittle and have some small rust bubbles under the window seal. I want to make a appointment with a body shop for repair, but thought I would ask for some advice first. Any suggestions?

I think you mean the alpine windows. I too have some small bubbles starting to appear around the seal edges. I have not taken care of this yet, but a quote I received was $250. That was for a single window. I think this is rather high though.

Alpine windows sounds right. The bubbles are rust, were do the aluminum panels end and the steel panels begin on the rear quarter?

my D1 developed the same problem -- are your rubber mouldings splitting in the corners from dryrot/age? my rear windows were leaking so bad that the carpet in my cargo area was wet through the padding.... starting smelling somthing.

took some black silicone sealant and pushed it into the spots where the rubber mouldings were splitting, then did two or three more applications until i got a smooth surface -- you might have to check it out again after a hard rain or car wash to make sure that you sealed it up.

it worked for me -- no more leaking or wet carpet. i did this on the alpines, rear side, and cargo door windows. $5 for silcone sure beats the hell out of $250 per window!!!

hope this helps.

Seals on the windows are good. I think moisture has found a weak spot in the panels and is creating that wonderful British rust!

Roof is steel on the d1. This was a common problem and it took two fixes to get right in mine....but then again I haven't looked recently

The rust normaly looks worse than it is, the windows are easy to get in and out. If the rust has not extended past the rubber egde on to the body you can normally take out the glass and clean up the panel and paint the area just under the rubber, there normally is no holes just blisters. Just depends on how far you let it go. There is no sealer under the rubber from the factory this is how the water gets under.

ShaunP,
easy to get in and out? Do you need any special tools? Can you reuse the same window gaskets or will removal tear-up the old requireing new gaskets?

Thanks Shaun, the rust is just bubbles, no holes yet. My original thought was to remove the windows, get rid of the loose rust, and paint it with a rust encapsulator paint. The bubbles are just behind the seal.
Has anyone used a Trim and Moulding or Window sealant on these seals to keep the water out? Any luck with it?

Theres a TSB on leaking Alpine windows. I dont have access to them right now, but I know it tells you what is actually leaking and what you need to do to fix it. Mine leak, but I dont feel like doing the work it looks like it will take to get to those seals

Well the Discovery is going to the Land Rover dealer in Hyannis next week for some minor repairs. I have asked them to give me an estimate on repairing the rust. They do not have a body shop, but use a local shop for service. I will post a update and share the info I get.
