Anyone fish the Salmon River in NY? I am going this fall and could use some info. I never fished salmon before, what are some good baits? I'm using spinning gear. I'd like something that would work for salmon, stealhead, and trout so I dont have to switch bait a lot. Are egg sacks the best bet? What about spinners, how many oz do you recommend? I'm thinking about going end of September, are the fish still good to eat by then?

The Salmon River has some epic fish! I'd email or call a local guide shop for some local knowledge. Actaully I'd get a guide for a day, learn what i could then fish on my own! Lots of BIG fish in there. Definetely worth paying for a guide!

If it's in the budget I am deff going to get a guide, times are kinda tough tho. I got a guide down in the FL Keys the first year I went, now when I go down I rent a boat for the week and kill it. Hiring a guide is a real learning experience... I will probably go during the week since I hear the weekends are way too crowded. It's looking like egg sacks on a size 2 hook with 10-15lb floro leader is the ticket for an all-around rig. I'll bring some bigger panther martins and talk to the locals. It's my first time going up so it's going to be a learning experience. I have a penn 4500 that I am going to put on an 8.5 salmon ugly stick. As for catch and release, I keep what I actually use, never more. If anyone wants to meet up I'm down!

And don't forget to practic catch and release.

What's "practic"?

A good bit of chrome can be found in the Salmon! Get yourself a two-handed and swing away!
