So I guess my detroit doesn't work…

I have never had a ratching noise from mine and I KNOW it works...
I bet if we put chassis ears on it we would hear something. Maybe some are quieter than the rest, but they usually make a little noise. I think the last carline I saw one installed at the factory was a Z28 in the early to mid 90's. Some people just would not accept it and got them replaced. I always hoped they wouldn't call them back and I could get it out of the warranty bin. Never got one, they always wanted them back.

The unique t-case in the Rovers tame the DL's. It's a different animal in a Jeep or any other truck that does not use the all-wheel-drive t-case Rover uses. If you've never done it, try driving a 5-speed Toyota PU with a DL in the rear. It sounds like the rear axle is coming unglued until you get used to it and learn how to coast through turns. You'd never know it was there in a Rover, though. That's because the power is going to the path of least resistance.

I think your right. Have any of you ever heard the slapping that a Defender makes on decel if the park brake is too tight? There's a TSB about it. It's a strange noise and has something to do with the type of Dif they run in it.

Never heard any ratcheting from my Detroit. The rare bang when it lets loose during acceleration but generally not noisy.

Under load it's locked. If you have noise when under load you have a busted spring.

If I remember correctly years ago Detroit came out with the "soft locker". If my memory is correct they were a lot quieter when ratcheting. They all ratchet because that's what they do, but I'd imagine the type of lube you run has a lot to do with how loud they can be as well.

I'll chime in too, I've had 2 detroits and neither of them is very loud and they both work. I think I heard a bang/clunk one time on the one I have now. Back in the late 80's we had a Z28 with a posi rear end. I don't know if it was a detroit or not but I don't recall hearing anything really loud and by the look of the dual tire burn out's I did on a daily basis it was working just fine.

That being said, I really like my TT/DT combo for off road use. It's a very capable combination. But I love my selectable lockers, after having owned selectable lockers. I truly believe people who say they don't see an advantage of a selectable over a full time locker have never owned them.

Here is a shitty video showing some crab walk - only on purpose, and on the front axle, yet showing one benefit of the selectable locker. You may have to watch the video several times to see what I'm getting at, but the commentary is good.

In this instance the mud was super slimy. We were all having issues making a right turn out of the creek to come up the hill. The front wheels only wanted to push and traction was minimal.

Here, I unlocked the t-case, pulled the e-brake, locked the front axle, turned the wheel and stabbed the gas. By unlocking the t-case and pulling the e-brake I created a pivot point. The front crabbed over to the right and I was able to release the e-brake and climb out where I had a little more meat to bite into. This was SCARR 2010ish.

I didn't realize that all trails are off camber. I guess I would rethink it if I had that much trouble. But Chris Snell said he has a Detroit and he lives in Colorado. I'm intersted in what he's got to say about how he does. Honestly since about 10 yrs ago most my wheeling is done on a Polaris Sportsman. I got bit by that bug and love the fact that if I break something too badly I just trade up. I have bought so many machines I'm sure my dealer would bring my new machine to me and trailer my broken trade home. My disco is for winter and my 18 year old kids daily driver now. It's hard to keep a old disco in groceries getter condition, but that's my goal.



Scratch the last part of that. I had a 99 disco SD THAT WAS IN GROCERY GETTER CONDITION. My 18 yr old son was using it as his daily driver. He just rolled it a couple times into a corn field. No lockers , just a shitty rooky driver. It looks great...... Not
