Hey guys..I just got back from about a 1000 mile road trip :) Disco is doing good sorta (let me find some wood). I popped the hood to check the fluids, the usual oil, coolant, power steering, ******..I went to turn the Rover on and I heard a scream (No joke thought I might have ran over a kid). It is a very high pitched whining noise coming from the Alt area. Checked the water pump with a stethoscope and it sounded normal, tried some belt dressing, still there, checked the alt (tested ok 13.89V). It appears only @ idle. The belt was replaced @ 62K miles..and the Rover is now @ 80K. The belt looks ok (no splits or cracks). I also checked the power steering pump..It sounds ok. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance. Vac leak??.. Possible intake manifold or a vacuum line. i have had this problem on and off as long as i have owned my 95. I have found that is most common near the pass side front of the intake just behind the alt. It is a very loud high pitch squeal just like you have described. A quick test : run the engine until the sound is made then use a can of wd40 or any thing that is combustible and spray it near the intake where you think a leak may be and you will hear the engine rpm rise and fall as it sucks in the spray. There is your leak.. if not then that eliminates it ..

No Serg I have not replaced that *yet*. I wanted to change out the thermostat @ the same time as I did the H2O pump. I wanted to avoid draining coolant twice if I could. I actually am dreading the water pump because of the gasket issue(s)..My luck I will scrape part of the engine block off

Steve: you know what is bizarre? Is that I do not think that I have ever seen that alt put out more than 13.9V since I have owned the D1. In fact, under load it normally drops to like 13.68V. I have a gut feeling that my inhibitions are correct..It is the alt. I have been toying with the Mean Green idea for awhile now. Maybe its time to take the plunge. Serg what do you think?

Have you tried just pulling the belt off to see if the noise stops?

I'm putting my bets on the tentioner pully. If that is the case, you can replace it now for 7 bucks. Or, wait till it fails and risk replacing the "wheel" too.

Alt voltage is normal. Check your serpentine belt routing. My guess is it goes from alt to pwr strg w/out going under fan clutch. If it is your tensioner bearing, the tensioner is expensive but you can pull the bearing out and get it from NAPA

Roverchic, just keep it! If you are that attached why sell. Sounds like you have a good handle on fixing it. I plan on keeping mine for a long time just want to park a D-90 along side it in the garage. Got the ok form the wife to do so. God my wife is so cool. Anyway back on subject. start buying more tools and it will be new before you know it.

Cheers, Andy

Melissa, well, if you feel like getting new Alternator, you can try your luck with MG. I will wait till friday package arrives to make my final conclusion of them. So far its been pretty much pissing contest between MG folkz and me. Dared to push them for warranty you see.

On other hand, if you dont have much electrical trinkets in Henry - you can always get 80A-90A version for like 155$ (no core charge at all)

You can use screwdriver of crowbar to detect noise source better than stetoscope. At least thats what i discovered on my journey of locating noises.

I never heard alternator skretching, mine went down with some thud-thud sounds. If you can catch when its making this noise, i'd still get water pump thing checked out first. With tensioner pulley you can pretty easy tell if it making noise by removing belt and getting it to rotate fast by hand. If it makes any kind of noise - its time to let bearing go :) You can get replacement at local NAPA or PartsPalace easy - they are stock items.

On water pump replacement - well. Its not that terrible really, for some people gasket pretty much peels off right away. Overwise you just keep spraying it with some gasket remover (protecting rest of engine with paper towels) and wiping off. If you terrified of skratching it completely - you can get wooden putty thingy from kitchen , and use it. It shall be not affected much by gasket remover, and yet it wont skratch your block.

When you gonna deal with thermostat - make sure you put it in right direction btw :) Other than that its dead simple, apart from having to improvise on how to get those bolts off and then it all on with gasket and thermostat.. :)
