This may be the only part of a D1 I've never taken apart

I'm getting sick of slamming the door on the buckle every day. Has anyone fixed this, and how did you do it?

Good suggestion. Next question: where do you buy a replacement seatbelt? Assuming the whole thing comes as an assembly. Searches for this part on Atlantic British and Rovers North turned up nothing.

Why not buy a used one from one of the many options for used parts sellers? I don't know if there's some nuance with the D1, but on the D2 it's a 2-bolt job.

This was my first thought as I have done plenty of business with the fine vendors that Discoweb knows and loves. Another question to weigh: is this a part that makes sense to buy used? Is replacing a worn 19-year old seatbelt retractor with a 20-year old seatbelt retractor going to result in meaningful extension of useful life? There are many parts I'm happy to buy used if they are in good shape. This is one that gets so much wear that there is an argument for buying new. If they are not available new then that limits options.

Not sure about the answer in general, but... clearly some belts are used much less than the others.

How long do you plan to keep the truck, and how frequently do you use the belt? I never keep the same vehicle for more than 1-2 years, and only use it once every 1-2 weeks, so the incremental wear that a used part like this will experience during my ownership is minimal.

Well I got it in 1998 and drive it about 25% of the time, so new would be nice

Let's see... my current vehicles' mean time in my possession - 12.16 years. Driver side belt used every time a vehicle is driven. Passenger side - at most one time out of ten trips.
Need to check if passenger side is the same as driver side.

I have done it. What a pain in the ass it is. I ruined the one from the junk yard , so I completely took that one apart. I removed the belt and then took the good retractor from my rig and put the used belt on it. I struggled for 4 or more hours to get it all back together. And then all of a sudden. Plop. The whole thing went together in 45 second. Not really sure what I did differently. I did notice that the grease in both retraction wheels had hardened up. I would pull the cover and carefully lubricate both sides of the unit and cycle it If it works, be happy. If you pull the unit, make sure to zip tie the belt so that it does not retract the belt too far in the reel. If that happens then you are done and taking the whole thing apart. Good luck.
