Service engine light/ code checking

Well I searched and found all sorts of info on disco 1s but little on disco 2s.
This is the third time my service engine light has come on and I am sick to death of it. How can I pull the codes to see what is causing it? Paper clip in the fuses and watch the blinking lights? Does it require and obd 2 code reader..does someone sell a palm pilot version for disco 2s. Autozone says they cant pull my codes and the dealer is salivating at the thought.

The first time I guess it was the gas cap as it went off after several days. I tried the battery disconnect for several hours and no dice. I refuse to be held at the mercy of the Wallet Raiders at the dealership!

alrighty I found the link in tech for my very own code OBD 2 code reader for $122. So, you folks that own them, what do you think?

Is there really no other way to reset or read the codes.

You can go to Autozone or equivalent and get them to read the codes. I know that Autozone will do it for free...

Obdii

I got a reader on the cheap about a year ago for my D1 (it's a '96 and uses OBDII) and I have used it 4 times to pull codes and reset them. I'm sure it has paid for itself twice over as the service engine light seems to come on at the drop of a hat and the dealer would have milked me for $1,000 when all I needed was plugs or one O2 sensor or a gas cap.

DiscoJag,
I was just wondering what the brand and model is of code reader that you are using with your D1?

Thanks,

I use OBD-2.com software and like it very much.

The Lou!
Baum

Baum also makes software/cables that will work with Palm & Handspring, and a few others handhelds I believe. Last time I checked, they were around $175 if you already own a handheld. It's on my wish list. :) You should be able to find them on a search (I'd find it for ya but I've got to get back to work). I believe there is also an ad in the classifieds here where someone is selling a laptop system that has been set up with the ODBII software.

The problem with using an OBD-II reader on a DII will only give you part of the story. The autobox also can cause illumination of the MIL. I know of no OBDII reader that will also read the autobox codes.

Check to see that the vent line leading from the right valve cover to the plenum is not leaking at the plenum. This can be determined by the oil vapor evidence around the plenum. This appears to be a common cause for an improper A/F mixture error code.

If you find this condition, remove the clmap, pull the hose, remove hose barb, apply pipe dope and reassemble, carefully tightening so as not to break the barb.
