I've flown with a handgun in checked luggage numerous times
I now use an old school hard sided suitcase with built in locks. Transporting a firearm is only time you can have a locked suitcase, not using "TSA locks". Out of over a dozen times, only had an issue once, when a TSA agent in PHL cut off the lock just because his flow chart said to, and he didn't notice that it had already been screened. TSA had to provide me with a new lock that time.
Brett, just don't try to do it flying out of Newark.
