Land Rover skipped the cost of developing a new engine from scratch, but had to spend money tuning the Jag V-8 to cater to the 20% to 25% of Land Rover drivers who report taking their vehicles off road.

25% of land rover owners take their vehicle offroading? So that means 1 in 4 of these soccer moms I see driving them, are actually weekend warriors and go rock crawling? :)

"The maturation of Land Rover's lovable but homely Discovery SUV into the handsome LR3..."

I'm a little offended! :)

I'm also not really sure the Disco was ever an actual direct competitor to the "high-volume, populist SUVs" either. At least around here they don't seem to be.

Did anyone catch the slide show? It appears the LR3 will have center and rear locking differentials. Also, guaging from the drivetrain & suspension switches, it appears that the driver will be very busy when driving off road in varying terrain. Looks like it should be an interesting vehicle, assuming if LR can remain solvent.

...and the fact that the company is already losing money.

Believe it or not there are those 'Soccer Moms" who go offroad in a very serious way. Don't get me wrong, I agree that most Disco drivers (Moms) do not wave, however be open to those of us who do offroad and do drive the kiddos to soccer. (Actually for me its Hockey-but what the hey).
