I shoulda snapped a pic l;ast week of my disco

30 2"x12"16' pressure treated lumber on the SD roof rack...each piec probably weight close to 80-90 pounds...I think I might have exceeded the load capacity slightly...Although the week before I had 30 rools of 30 pounds roofing felt up there...figure 100 pounds for each roll...

Almost makes me think of that Jetta with the pile of lumber stacked up on its roof...

Marcus..

Marcus, let me see if i have my math straight, you had 3000lbs of roofing felt on your roofrack? Or am i missing something here. 30 rolls at 100lbs each?

Towing a 72 Rangie. The Disco handled it just fine- no complaints.

Bringing home the camper-
Didn't have the electric brake controller and honestly didn't see the need for one.

I like that '72 Rangie. Looks pretty sweet with just two doors.

Here's mine about 3 yrs ago, towing an 18' ski boat to Lake Hartwell, before the lift.

Nice setup, how much the rangie and the trialer weight together? The max towing rate for both Discovery I and RRC is 5500 lbs, right? I am looking for a RRC for parts on ebay and towing it back home...

Here's my 1996 Discovery pulling a 6x12 U-Haul trailer from Glacier National Park, Montana to Olathe, Kansas, near Kansas City. Photo taken at a rest area in Montana. Exact weight unknown, but very fully loaded and estimated to be at least 9,000 pounds total combined vehicle/trailer weight. Drive was slow, took 5 days to cover about 1,600 miles. Rarely used over-drive. Never got above 55 mph. Sometimes had to go down to second gear up steep grades and, once, down to low-range both up and down one very steep mountain pass. But, no serious problems. The Discovery has a short wheelbase, so stability can be an issue. Have to pay very close attention to what's going on at all times.

Freelander and boat back when the Hippo was stock. Only 1200 - 1400 pounds, I forget how much gas the boat had in it at the time. Not enough weight to really have an effect on the truck.

I know it was pushing limits...but at the time i couldnt get the stuff delivered...and I had 10 guys waiting for it...and noone on site with a pick up truck...I just took it slow and steady and made sure the stuff was well distributed up there...Normal scenario I wouldnt have done it...Good to know the racks that well construced though...

this topic brings up a funny story. we were towing a 6x12 U-Haul trailer behind the '67 109 SIIa and traveling in Illinois early in the morning. we were going about 75mph totally forgetting that the limit with a trailer is 55mph on the IL. Interstate.

my wife sees a Statie heading in the other direction almost breaking his neck doing a double take at what he is seeing. he flips around and sure enough, pulls me over.

after noting that the brake lights on the trailer didn't work, he started asking what year was the Land Rover. totally surprised me he even knew it was a LR. after talking about the restoration, etc., he reminded me that the limit was 55mph and to keep my lights on to help with the brake light deal. and have a good trip - no ticket or even a warning.

very cool fellow.

Two things:

Where do you guys get all those 2-door Rangies?

And second: How do you get your Rovers to tow???

One of the main reasons we got the DII is that our DI wouldn't do more than 55mph on normal roads with a single axle camper!! I have not yet tried it with the new ride but I am terrified that it won't do much better and that it will be constantly bottoming out. It is a 19' Travellite.

Here is my '94 LWB towing our 1950 Kenskill Sports Rover camper. We just finished doing a resto on the interior of the trailer but haven't polished the outside. It is only 10' long and I have no idea how much it weighs! The RR did great towing it up into the mountains on the dirt access roads.

We get the 2 door Rangies from the U.K. ;) There's a few in the US, but not many. Unmolested ones fetch silly money.

Change your rear springs- The stock springs can't handle towing well at all, at least on mine. I'm having some custom made, still waiting for 'em. The 4.6 pulls like a beast- I have no complaints at all about available power. For one straight stretch I ran it up to 75 with the rangie on the trailer so I could get around a tanker truck with hazmat signs who appeared to be leaking something. Whatever it was, I didn't want to be near it. The grunt of the 4.6 impressed me.

okay not in tow but kind of scary becasue they stuck out of the back so far. I think had the tailgate let loose they would have torn my roof off. lo

2x4 x 16 footers about 32 of them. i'm guessing about 30lbs as they were laying in the rain. basically 1000'lbs supported by the tail gate.
