Signs/trouble shoot for engine overhaul

Gidday,

I've been trying to get threads on engine overhaul, but can't seem to find any, so I hope some of you can enlighten me on the early signs when engine overhaul is due.

Mine is 300Tdi and recently I sent the Disco to a workshop to fix leaks, from engine oil related, to auto transmission oil leak. The workshop did just that and also informed me that he (the mechanic) suspects a more serious problem from the engine, since he observed engine oil splattered all over. Well, based on my friend's advice I told him just to fix the leaks first and we'll see what happen next.

This is what's happened. The disco still leaks, engine oil still dripping from the flywheel housing' from its drain hole and when I pull out the engine oil dip stick while the engine was still running, oil starts spattering from the dip stick's hole!

What does this mean?? Engine overhaul is due?? My TDi milage is about 190k, year 1996.

This means that you have a compression leak. Compression from above the piston is leaking into the engine block through the piston rings. That means you must disassemble the engine and look for the cause. Could be a broken piston ring or a cracked piston. Could be wear in the engine itself and you need to overhaul and use a larger piston diameter (+10 or +20 until +60, depends what is available from LR for the 300TDI engine).

By the way, where are you writing from? Nearly all vehicles on the Discoweb are petrol V8's. You will not find many people with TD's.

Cool, yeah, that's what they (the mechanics) told me yesterday, and I am convinced now that mine needs overhaul!

BTW, I am from Malaysia, not Aussie. We do have V8s around in this country but not as many as the TDi or TD5 for that matter, since we have to pay the bloody road tax which will cost you a bomb if you own a v8 engine! Better off with a TDi, and petrol is ain't that cheap either here!

Anyway, thanks a lot!
