Slipped sleeve or Head Gasket?

The point is why add a new component for a simple test?
Now to get back to his knocking problem. I think he is going to find that the oil pressure will initially look fine but will drop as the engine warms (as it will). It is not going low enough to set off the sensor (6 psi?) but it will get low.
The question is, how low is it going?
My 2004 has a rod knock. It has been steadily getting worse but I have been driving it that way for 3 or so years. The oil pressure looked ok being at the low end of normal but as the rod wears the pressure drops until at low idle the oil light is starting to flash.
This is an excellent excuse to buy an engine to rebuild and in fact I just got mine back from the machine shop to start.

Brady's British Motorworks right outside of Raleigh is a quite LR shop. My truck is there right now getting the oil pump replaced, I had the same issue you are describing.

You have to remove the oil pressure switch circled in this pic and install the gauge.

Thanks everyone for the help. Installed the pressure gauge. Pressure at start up is 30 psi and it never went above 35 psi. Advise?

So at start up it was at 30 psi's and went to 35 at 2000 rpm and then when the coolant got to 200 degrees it went to 15 psi at idle and 30 at 2000 rpm.

So if I was looking at an 04 with an "undiagnosed tick", would it be best to just avoid taking the chance?

Pressure Specs?

loud ticking
Is this just at idle or does it go away with increased rpm?

How long have you had this D2 and driven it much? The hot idle tapping/ticking on my newly acquired 04 D2 went away after topping off the oil and taking out for a 50 mile run on I-95.

What weight oil are you using? Probably should be 15w-50 considering the miles and ok in Raleigh. May help if you have leaky lifter.

Manual calls for 40 PSI and checking at 2500 RPM, did you rev higher than 2000 to see if it increased any? 30 PSI is below specs but 25 PSI was the minimum called for in the older 3.5 manual. Idle pressure is good and shouldn't cause your noise if only at idle.

I revved it up to 3k rpm and couldn't get it higher then 35 psi.
Before I do anything else she I change the oil pump? 190k miles and it's never been changed.

IF that's what makes you happy but not likely to make the noise go away. Regardless of what the shop said you have proven it's not a pressure issue. Easier things to try first. Hyd lifters can get sticky and sometime a oil flush/change will help. They can also wear and a heavier weight oil may provide more actuation.

Noticed you ask many questions but don't answer others'? Hello, does it tick at all rpms or just idle? Have you run the hell out of it and try to break it?

It does go away at higher RPM but I'm not sure if it goes away or it just gets faster so I don't hear it. It's been making the noise for about a year and it's been getting steadily worse. (It's very loud) I have had the truck for two years.

Based on this I am thinking you will need a rebuild.

Have you checked lifters for excessive noise, fuel injectors, flywheel bolts, fan, pulleys, water pump? Have you taken it to a shop that actually diagnosis the problems? If you do not know what you are doing find someone that does and just doesn't look at it and guess.
