Slow/hesitant starting issue

2000 Discovery 2 - 135K

When starting the truck it hesitates/struggles and then finally turns over. It's totally silent at first, no clicks, nothing. Then turns over after a few seconds.

Just changed the coolant tank and throttle body gasket. I was getting some coolant fluid leaking under the hood - maybe some got on the starter?

I changed the starter at 121K in 2014 ( I don't drive much) so it's 10yrs old now but not many miles on it. When the starter went bad i would hear a series of clicking and then it would finally start. This is totally different.

Crankshaft position sensor changed at 95K back in 2007.

I had the battery tested at autozone and they said it was fine.

It has never failed to start and runs fine once started.

Any help as to the possible cause would be appreciated.

Check battery cables, grounds, relays, starter wires, starter is tight to engine.

yes - i think i will remove the heat shield and clean up that area good. Looks dirty. I am not planning on pulling the starter out. What is nut size/tool needed for the electrical wire that connects to the starter? And i think there is another connector that just pulls off with a pinch? Thanks.

Something else that happened when changing the throttle body gasket, I removed the air filter cover while doing that job. There is a mesh like tube that runs into the fender where a snorkel could be installed maybe. The whole thing disintegrated as it's old. Put it back as best I could but wondering what affect this has on the air intake now and it that's causing the hesitant start?

This is the replacement which doesn't cost too much. But lately I have been getting nickled and dimed with this truck and trying to do the minimum.

Buy it... 55$ is nothing compared to sucking in dirt and needing a new engine.. I get the nickle and dimed to death but one thing I've learned with rovers, spend the nickels and dimes or it costs dollars later...

Finally got the heat shield off. Pain in the a** . Starter looked clean at the connections. Cleaned them a bit and still no joy. I read some where else this could be a relay issue? Where is that and how do i test it? Thanks.

Have you tried a remote starter tool to eliminate that the starter is faulty?

Looks like the relays are in under hood compartment. Test relay, or apply direct power to circuit thru relay plug in.

ok - so it's not the relay. Has anyone has a starter fail where it just slowly turns at first and finally starts with no clicking? Last time mine failed I got a rapid series of clicks before the start. This is a lucas starter from atlantic british so maybe it behaves differently that the original OEM part ?

Read some where the fuel pump may be bad but i just had that replaced about 8 months ago.

This problem may have me beat.

Do you have a warranty from AB?
Is your battery fully charged?
Maybe pull the starter and have it bench tested?
Sounds like your starter is dragging?

Remove the starter and have it benched tested at a rebuilders shop.

I replaced my 97 D1 starter once in 27 years with a Bosch hasn’t failed yet.

Yep. Where to order a starter? I am not having confidence with Atlantic British Lucas starters as that what i used before and it hasn't lasted long. Pissed I have to do this again.

May try an AC Delco or Duralast starter; I'm finding some parts it's better to go aftermarket with instead of what Atlantic British or other Land Rover specialists offer and the starter is one of them.

If you know of a local rebuilder have them rebuild the Lucas starter.

Starter replaced. Fires right up. Heat shield in a wrestling match but got er done. Hopefully this one will last longer.
I usually have good luck with the parts from Atlantic British but will never buy another Lucas starter. Granted it's been 10 years but it only lasted around 14K miles. I don't drive much........
