slow starting?

For the past few weeks my 95 Disco is slow to start in the morning. It will crank over just fine, but it will take a few attempts before it will start. I will crank it for a few seconds, stop, and then crank it again. Sometimes it will be three or four times before it will start. It only does it in the morning after it has parked over night. It will start up just fine the rest of the day. Any ideas? maybe a starter?

a complete opposite question:
how do you prevent the GEMS D1 from starting for the 1st second or two of cranking, without tripping the CEL?

Fuel Pressure

Just a thought, sounds like your fuel pressure is bleeding down over night, have you checked the pressure at the rail? Could be the pressure valve in the fuel pump, they have been know to fail and allow the pressure to fall off over night thus making you crank the engine a number of times.
Good luck,
Mike

It could also be the injectors leaking down - does it blow black smoke or stink of gas when it finally starts?

Recently I had the same problem on my 96 Discovery. It was a leaking injector. Fuel accumalates overnight ontop of the pistons. That doesn't allow the engine to start easily and once it starts you have black smoke coming out of your exhaust. Had to change injectors, they were already eight years old.

I will check for smoke tomorrow morning. It is usually dark outside when I leave for work so it is not that easy to see. Thanks for you help.

I checked the fuel presure at the rail and it is 30psi. I know this is low so I must be having a fuel presure problem. Is there anyway to check the presure valve in the fuel pump or am I looking at replacing the fuel pump? Is the fuel pump in the tank or is it external? I did not see a pump when I was replacing the fuel filter last week. Sorry for so many questions, I do not have access to my Rave CD. TIA

I have been reading the archives for a replacement fuel pump. It looks like I can use a pump out of a 89 V6 cavalier. It sounds like all I need to do is change the wiring of the plug. Has anybody ever tried doing this before that can confirm it works?
