Soft Top vs SW

I'm about as new to this as you can get. I've been wanting a D90 for a long time, and they are finally dropping closer to my price range.

My question is, can you remove the top from the Station Wagon models and put on a convertible top as you would do with the soft top model and the fiberglass shell?

Thanks. Lance

No. If you want to have a soft top. You need to buy a soft top version.

not actually. you can take off the metal roof and install a soft-top. then reverse for Winter.

there is a write-up on www.D-90.com in the custom mod section on the process. http://www.d-90.com/mod/sw2st/index.htm

Mike Smith at ECR also made ECR4 capable of the same operation. go to ECR's site and you can read about his set-up as well.

No doubt though that this is not a quick deal, yet, it is possible.

I had a '95 D90 SW and didn't think about taking off the roof as with the sunroof open and all the windows down/open, it was pretty breezy.

In any case, D90s are cool vehicles and you can't go wrong with either imho.

where do you live? just know a soft top is a pain in the ass to take off&on ... a hard top is a bigger pain in the ass ... winter is cold and you need time to warm up the inside ... however, runnin' topless is bliss :D

Thanks for the replys,

I love the looks of the Station Wagon, and the Soft Top with the top down. I live in Maryland and had planed to have the soft top on 7-8 months out of the year. I don't have room in the garage, and figured a hard top would be great in the winter.

I've owned convertibles (cars) in the past and love driving that way. My favorite way to drive.

I would have been disappointed had I rushed out and bought a SW with the misunderstanding I could "easily" switch between tops. I had figured changing the soft top with the fiberglass would be a PITA, but to me would be worth the effort if only done a couple times a year.

I am working in Germany at the moment and there are plenty of people here and in other parts of Europe who have a 90 and run a soft top in summer and a hard-top/SW top in winter.

I have done the swap a few times and it takes less than 2 hours if you have all the tools/nuts/bolts, and nothing is siezed or stuck. The hardtop takes up a fair bit of space when it isn't on the truck.

Another consideration. A fiberglass "hard top" was made for the soft tops, more as a stop gap than anything. Most people use that rather than fully convert to the hardtop. The fiberglass ones come up for sale often, and I believe a few retailers still have new ones in stock.

If you are ok without a roll cage you can run a regular hard top and a euro spec soft top.

The best thing to do is get a decent soft top, a badger/roversnorth and use that in winter. The fiberglass tops suck.
