The SOLAROS website doesn't look like it's been touched in a while, but they posted on Facebook the other day that the 2015 event is at Windrock again, Sept 11-13th. As long as I can get off work, I'll be there. Heard good things about this event, looking forward to it.

Looks fun. I was thinking I would be able to make it this year but I've got a TDY starting the 14th. Looks like I won't be able to do this one ever since I probably won't live in the south again.

Picture time. These are from the beginning of trail 44, I think? We had been riding blues, and we decided to try a black diamond. We found out later, after our trucks had suffered some damage, that this was actually a double black diamond. We got about a third of the way through and had to turn around with our tails between our legs. Third picture is one of the guys we were wheeling with, Kevin (whose last name I forget, or never learned) going up the hill climb that stopped us. More on that in a minute.

Here's some of the damage we suffered as a result of our foolishness. I got off the lightest. I was winching my way up a hillside and found a tree with my right front fender. Kevin, winching up the hill pictured in that last post, snapped his right rear Ashcroft axle, and possibly did some damage to his rear ARB locker (which actually belongs to Justin Monnin, who challenged him to break it).

We couldn't get the splines of the axle out of the diff, so we decided to cut the outside end of an extra stock axle that I had with the intent of bolting it in place to keep the hub bearing together while we limped it back to the campsite. The Sawzall made it a little over a third of the way through the axle before quitting, and I smacked it with a big rock a few times to break it the rest of the way. Brian from Outback Garage in Long Island was with us, and was performing the repairs. His damage for the day was two cut sidewalls. He rode back to camp on my spare tire.

Obligatory pics from around the campsite. I never got around to asking the guy with the Camel if it was a reproduction or an original, since I was far more interested in slamming beers after the afternoon we had, but it was a really clean truck either way.

sounds like you had a good time. I'm really wanting to get back to windrock but probably won't happen until next year.

Oh yeah, how did he manage to break the Ashcroft? Was he getting a lot of wheel spin or bouncing? I've seen people smoking 36" TSL's with them and not break anything.

No wheel spin at all. The tire on the side that broke was up against that muddy hillside. He was winching when he did it. His setup is a 4.6 motor running into a low range t-case, then 4.10 gears with ARB lockers front and rear turning 35s, so all we could figure is he just put too much torque down and that wheel didn't want to turn any more. Brian said he thought he saw a rock that was protruding out from the side get into contact with that wheel right before we heard the pop.
