It's nothing new, most of the airlines will charge the military for bags, hell united tried to charge me for one checked bag. I was in uniform on a gov ticket at the time and had orders in hand. I had to get a supervisor out there to avoid the charge.

That makes me sick.

Oh what a glory that travel is... Now I travel light, since my seabag with body armor, helmet, boots, jacket, and so on disappeared between Gryphon and United flight... I am still on the hook for most of this gear.

Did the TSA leave you a little card that translated means "if your shit's missing tuff shit"....????

I leave nothing of value in suitcases anymore after being ripped off. It all goes in my backpack or it doesn't go.

Here's a thought: Active Military in uniform or with orders in hand: Don't charge them anything for baggage and upgrade them to first class when possible.

agree with you az max. I saw this video this morning on another site. Whenever I see someone in uniform at a restaurant, coffee shop, etc. I usually try to pick up their bill. Thank you to all in service... and hopefully delta will reimburse these guys.

To an outsider, this story may seem outrageous. To a Soldier, this is a stupid non-story, created by some guys who--it appears--were ignorant of government travel rules. The proper thing to do would have been for them to put the charges on their Government Travel Cards and get reimbursement from the gov't for these fees. If, for whatever reason, they didn't have a GTC, they could have kept their receipts and filed for reimbursement at their home station. Instead, they made a big stink about it and embarrassed everyone who knew that there is a right way to handle the situation which doesn't involve making a YouTube video.

It's not right to expect the airlines to carry unlimited amounts of Soldiers' luggage with no compensation from the government. They have to draw the line somewhere.

When you wear a uniform, you take your shit and shut the fuck up. Such behavior should never be tolerated, especially from an NCO.

If I did something like this, I'd have been punished according to the highest applicable offense. I'd be lucky if they didn't muscle up the manpower to kick the ever-living shit out of me.

We never did such things. I saw things degrade from afar, and by the time I was out, I knew it was going to be a fucking circus. Now, videos and pictures are all over the damned internet, and everyone seems to know precisely what's going on right as it happens.

Fuck that. You don't have a voice. Your opinion is generated for you, high up the chain of command. Stories like this annoy me. They've got paperwork to fill out when your pussy hurts. You don't need to make a video crying about it.

Delta didn't intend to screw anyone. Half their systems are automated, and soldiers commonly receive confusing instructions when traveling. Delta just puts people on planes and moves them about. Some of those people are soldiers.

Cheers,

Kennith

They do it all the time. If you travel much at all you will see this.

I've been bumped to first class before, and had it offered more than once. Last couple of times there was a young private on the flight as well and I had them move him up instead.

I was offered a first class seat on my way home from deployment by the guy sitting in it. He said it was the place a soldier coming home should sit. I told him after the last year I would sit with the luggage as long as it got me home to a beer, a steak and a blow job. :D

Honestly like I said it's nothing new and you just have to deal with it. I only make a fuss about it when it's 1-2 checked bags and they are being tools...

My travel days are behind me. I work for a local Gov't and all necessary travel is within our borders. :(

On the other side of the coin, at what point do the airlines draw the line?

How many bags does the average commercial airliner hold?

So the outrage is that 3 bags are free but the 4th is $200. Their military orders said they could bring 4 bags. Someone fucked up.

So now 4 bags will be free. That's all well and good. What if someone wants to bring 5? Why shouldn't the 5th bag be free too? What about 6 or 7, 8 or 9? Should it all be free? How does the airline schedule flights if they can carry 400 bags total and 40 of the 200 passengers want to take 10 bags each?

What I'm saying is that at some point someone has to decide what is reasonable. I pity the poor fool who gets to be the decision maker - he's going to end up getting reamed on youtube and there will be an uproar, justified or not.

I'm trying to figure out WTF was in 4 bags, not to mention the carry-on...I've done this (several times) with a ruck, a kit bag for body armor/helmet/etc, and maybe one rolling duffel...and on the way home if you have more than that you didn't do a good job of mailing shit so that you weren't a walking train wreck everywhere you traveled...
