Anyone tried to put sound deadening material to the interior of the Defender. If so what kind of material and method did you use and what kind of result did you get .

I have 200 TDi 110 and it's noisy as hell and I would like to put a radio in it so that I can actualy here it at 60 mph.

As always all your input is always welcome.

Thanks

Pat

Do a search using the words "sound dampening". I did the entire interior of my defender for $85 or $90. The thread called Sound Dampening has my write up on it. Email me at leeflat1@yahoo.com for more info.

Centre steer Landrover and sound deadening a Defender - two things that can't be found in the rover world. First off, set your expectation low. I bought sound dampening for under the hood in my 110, and it probably dropped about 3 decibals. For the passenger area I went to my local farm feed store and bought 4X6' rubber horse/cow pen mats. These are 3/4" rubber, very dense and make great floor mats and actually do quite a bit on the road noise. Plus, they are relatively cheap. The best by far though is a large amp with sub, as that will deaden any road and engine noise the best!

Yep - my D90 has some loud speakers and a nice amp. Its better than any sound deadening. Its so loud that at 60mph with the top off, you cant even hear wind noise over the music

There's a nice read on the subject here:

http://www.shagadelic.org/VW/info/gmbulley-soundproof/

It makes reference to an older VW van, but the principles are all the same (i.e. silencing the huge areas of unsupported sheet metal.) Also talks about thermal insulation.

theirs always dynamat, it's used to sound proof int. when installing huge audio systems, I know some people that lined their trunks with this and now their subs sound much better and it's a much more silent inside the car

I used a product called Seel and Peel on my Defender. It is VERY similar to Dynamat. I bought 100 sq ft. for $89. Did my entire truck and still have tons left over. Works great. Did my floor, roof, bulkhead, seatbox and hood. It helped a ton, especialy the roof. I also use a thermal insulation blanket in my engine compartment that is attached to the bulkhead. The blanket does a great job at stopping noise and heat transfer from the engine compartment into the passenger compartment. I still have a few blankets available if anyone is interested $20 plus shipping.

Well after all your input I will be going with the Dynomat Extreme and some Lcomp for the firewall and the ceiling then some Hliner for the hood. After that I will be putting in an Exmoor moulded matting system.

And to top it all off, as most of you suggested, a good sound system will be instaled with decent amplifier and sub.

Hopefully that should bring it to an appreciable noise level.

Thanks again all.
