Just got an email from Justin at Lucky8 and he got 2 Southdown snorkels for D2's in. They will be adding them to the inventory and have them up on the site in the near future.

Not feelin the southdown. That bracket is hideous. Just as bad as having that ridiculous black plastic running all the way up your fender.

You can't turn the Mantec around without it looking ridiculous.

I agree...it looks cheap. I have mantec and I love it...I like safari too. That one looks like Jaos products.

It's silver because it's stainless steel. What's Justin pricing them at?

They are $448.
They stainless and can be power coated black.

There is one thing that this snorkel does that the other do not.
It connect to the air air box and not that crapy mesh piece. I wish I had the South down at
51 second in the video instead of the mantec.

If you look at the picture of Eric Choy's truck on the Lucky 8 page for the Equipe A-bar bumper (the 2nd pic.. driveway shot), you can see the South Down snorkel;

http://www.lucky8llc.com/Products.asp?ProductID=2177

He (and another local guy) got them a few years ago when 4x4 AG was still in business... he put a custom top on it, and also tried to use a spray-on truck bed liner to coat it black, but after a few tree branches, it started chipping off..

I think I bought the other local guys truck. It's funny they both put the same top on it. I took the pre-cleaner off for the time being because once I pulled the roof rack it looked like a giant male organ sticking up over the roof line.

A couple of things the tops on the Southdown does swivel but it's a cheap design and does not include drainage. It' probably my least favorite thing about the snorkel. I still have to find a solution at somejpoint but not sure what just yet. The pre-cleaner is just too big.

keep in mind, in regards to drainage, unless you get one of those mushroom style snorkels all snorkels have the same basic exterior design. drainage shouldn't be a worry, when it comes to a snorkel. the amount of rain, that will actually get sucked into your snorkel is negligible and you shouldn't be in a creek deep enough that the snorkel intake is under the water line!

yes, water, oil, coolant, anything in a fluid form versus vapor form will lock up a motor. anything in a vapor form will not. every crankcase ventilation system operates under that principle, in that cylinder head and crankcase vapors are directed into the intake manifold to be re-burned.

another thing to keep in mind, boosted turbo and blower applications use water misting systems to cool combustion chamber temps. we work with a handful of bmw and porsche tuners that can give you all the information you need on the benefits of water misting.

the difference between the southdown snorkel, in regards to the D2, is the deletion of the fiber mesh connector to the air box. with that being said, if you really think about it, if your snorkel connects to the fiber mesh air-box connector, you just spent at least $400 on something that does not actually work properly.

almost every D2's mesh connector, we see at our shop, has holes in it....and 100% of them are street driven vehicles. most jag's have the similar issue.

keep in mind, mine died when the ECM died. no water got in the airbox.... make sure you seal them up because a snorkel wont help you.... it might help with dust though.

Id still buy one though because.

Where do the other ones drain?

I am not saying this it the best snorkel and I sure do not like the stainless look but on function it maybe the best. I'll know more after the install.

Ps I am powder coating mine.

Don't get me wrong I have a south down on my truck and I think it's a decent snorkel. Would I have done things different if I was designing them? probably. I do think the top is a bit cheesy though. Mine was painted black with truck bed paint by the PO. But as was already mentioned it chips easy.

As for the drainage question. The mantec is rear racing so it does not need any. Yes you can turn the South down one backwards and I do but it looks dumb IMO. The Safari top uses the same design as most other ram air snorkel tops they use weeping channels that drain the water out along the outside of the tube.
