my brother and i both have D1s an we stripped a parts truck last year. One of the items we saved was radiator. Neither of currently need a rad, but i was thinking it might make sense to have the radiator professionally cleaned so that we can keep it as a spare. Does this make sense to do?

Sure. I had an original radiator serviced when my new, plastic replacement was junk out of the box. As far as I know, that truck is still going in Connecticut.

You might price out what a local radiator shop will charge for a re-core. It could be a cost effective alternative to buying an all-metal replacement and may even deliver better performance. Rates often vary regionally - up here in the PNW a re-core costs more than a plastic-tank radiator and less than an OE replacement. It's been a while since I looked into it and don't remember exact figures.

Having a quality spare is handy. It's a matter of when, not if you'll need to replace it.

OK, I'll dissent. Why? To have a radiator sitting around "just in case". If rads were known to fail entirely and suddenly then yeah, sure, it makes sense to have a good one around. But they don't.

If you have more than one vehicle and can always bring the rad from your Disco to a rad shop to be re-cored without too much hassle in your life, I would not bother. The work will take less than a day.
