Personally I'd never carry petrol on the rear of my car where any oblivious driver can rear end me.

X10

Plus the moment of a gas can (water, though fireproof is heavier than gas) on the rear door will probably screw up the hinges faster than putting a Hi-Lift back there.

I am only using this for off-roading. I wouldn't drive around town with a tank of fuel hanging on the back of my spare. Do you think full 2litre can would put that much stress on the hinge?

Where can you wheel in NC that your 23 gallon tank can not get you there and back from?

exactly. i wouldnt do it. its not useful and it will just say "poser" and you dont want people to think that.

there was some rich kid i went to highschool with. by the time he had graduated highschool, he had owned (through his parents of course) 2 defenders, a 75 fj, and a lexus version of the land cruiser. his second defender was badass, but he never ever left the pavement with it. yet he carried a jerry can full of water on the spare......thats the ultimate poser move. followed closely by a tire mounted gas can of course

We do some camping and muddin in Pisgah. I am planning to go to Tellico and out to Nantahala and along the east coast. I have no idea how easy it is to get fuel in these locations, it is just a precaution and for convenience. Kinda like having jumper cables. I don't have a roof rack and I would prefer not to have fuel inside my truck.

These locations are by no-means remote, but leaving from town at 2k above sea level to 6.5k my truck burns a ton of fuel running up the mountains. I want to have the ability ride around in the mountains for a weekend and not have to ride 20-30 min back down to a gas station.....

we are talking about only 5 extra gallons here....if you want to do it and can make one yourself even, then more power to you. but you will probably find it useless. if its that remote, which it isnt up there, fill up at the last chance before you get to the "wilderness". you'll have plenty of gas left over. just take the fact that you never see anyone carrying gas around here as a hint thats it not nesecary.

yes, everytime i leave from denver at 5000 ft and go up to Crested Butte [~9500ft] which IS by all means remote...my vehicle uses fuel too. Fill up your gas tank, poseur.

i didnt mean to run you off. i was just hoping on making you see what a dumbshit move it would be to mount something that holds roughly 40 lbs. of gas [that will likely never get used] on the back hinges of your truck.

Thats fair enough....I understand the extra 40lbs. The negative points are all good advice. It is part of the reason why I asked. Let's put this out of its misery. I'll post pics when I mount jerries on a SDroof rack......:D
