I bought my D2 with Toyo Proxes on them 255 55 18. Driver rear has become irrepairable. How long can it ride with the original GY HP as a replacement. I really don't want to stay with this brand and even thought of mounting tires on a set of 16" LR wheels I bought a while back.
Will the different tire cause problems or interfere with the all time 4 wheel drive. I test drove it, doesn't seem to track in one direction or anything. Please help-wife drives it 100 miles per day on her commute to work-don't want to make things worse.

fivespeed is right. as long as the size is the same. In addition, make sure that the air pressure is same.

difference in wheel speed due to difference in circumference can have a negative effect on your differential and transfercase.

just make sure they are the same.

I am no tire expert. I haven't even stayed at a holiday inn express. Nonetheless, my tire shop and some people on this site have said that there may be one problem you may encounter. If the Toyo's are well worn and the spare is basically new, it can cause ETC malfunction (I think activating for no reason) and possibly diff problems down the road. The reason is that the rolling diameter is different enough even though the tires are the same size. That is why my shop recommends 5 tire rotation instead of 4 tire for folks that actually may use their spares for more than a few miles at a time. Once again, I'm not a tire expert but that's what I've been taught.

Thanks for the input. Actually, the Toyo's have very good tread on them still-that is why I was reluctant to change out brands. I have heard about replacing 2 at a time. Whether there is any thruth to that I don't know?I will say that the tread patterns are very different between the Proxes and the HPs. I plan on deciding whithin a week-hopefully I will have the "spare" spare off by then.

greg adams is bang on with it! a new vrs worn tyre may have as much as one inch in tread depth difference! or simply put three 33inch tyres and one 34. measure the tread depth to find out exactly the differences.

When someone says same size, read that as the same circumfrence. Different manufaturers sizes can vary. ie, mfgA's LT265/75x16 /= mgfB's LT265/75x16
You have to measure to be sure, or at least look at their spec sheet. This can be a good ting though, if the four on the ground are worn and you're buying a new spare.
