She most likely has a broken speedo cable, if you are lucky.

It could also be what I believe they call the "right angle drive" for the cable. Basically where the cable inputs into the speedo on the dash. PIA to fix but I think normally the needle will bounce around if that's the problem.

My 87 RTR has a 2 piece speedo cable set-up. Speedo gauge started acting up (wouldn't roll the miles over just would "click"). Took it apart numerous times and rebuild (unsuccesfully).
Bit the bullet and bought a new speedo with the cables (2) and the right angle drive gear thingy. Now she works. FYI - even with 140K, the cables and right angle gear thingy were not in that bad of condition, but now I have a working speedo and piece of mind.
Now I gotta sell her, too many toys in the garage.
