I unplugged the vss and cleaned all the plug contacts and made sure of a good connection and the power loss and rough running is gone... for now... until it happens again one day.

I did that once. I will do it again. Happen to find the other end of the wire?

Is that the best solution to improving MPG or what?
Given that in both cases it was at night in Mojave with 95F outside, it was the best solution to drive with the rest of instruments working and illuminated.
Doesn't do any wonders to my truck's resale value.

As much as I appreciate the value of teaching a man to fish......... here is some info for ya.

I believe you will find that the two wires coming off the VSS (component X190) from connector C370 lead straight to the speedometer and fuse box. The Green / Yellow wire leads up to the facia fuse box at fuse 14 and the red / black wire leads to the speedo cluster. There is also a signal sent from the vss to the Curise Control module and the Engine Control module. I could look for you but that would take away all your fun of physically following the wires forward to the interior harnes.

All you need to know is in the Electrical Troubleshooting Manual (MY '96) in section E on page 2. Do you have that file on your computer... or the workshop manuals for that matter?

Possible culprit. Got a chance to poke around the fuse box. This wire was plugged in with fuse #6. I have no idea where it goes. Just disappears behind the dash. It had an 15amp inline fuse. I unplugged it, everything still is working accessories wise. Plugged the VSS back in. We'll see how it goes on the drive to work tomorrow.
