My 95 Disco seems to have a problem that I cannot figure out. I am hoping that someone out there has an idea.

She starts and then dies. This is not a cold-weather related problem though. It happens even if we have just driven 250 miles. Sometimes, in the middle of the road, if the RPM falls below 750, she dies. Then I have to crank her up and give her some gas and everything is fine till the next stop. Sometimes I have to try starting her 5-6 times. This has happened in the middle of the freeway during rush hour traffic the last couple of times. Hence this causes me great concern.

There is not "Check Engine" light or anything. There are no codes being fired either. Hence its more puzzling.

Has anyone seen this behavior before? I have changed the fuel filter multiple times. And every time I change the fuel filter, it works fine for the next 2 weeks or so and then the problem resurfaces.

Thanks a bunch.

Life of fuel pump

What is the life of a fuel pump? I had mine replaced at the dealer a couple of years ago.

Is this something that I can do myself on a 95 Disco? Will I need a lot of tools to accomplish?

Fuel pump

In the tank...... :D NO really lift the carpet in the rear you will find padding feel around about center you will feel a cover cut the pad. The fuel pump access cover is there (phillips screws.) Remove and you will see the top of the pump. Also change the filter.

I would check your fuel pressure. With the engine off and the ignition on you should see 34-36 psi. With the engine running you should see about 30 psi. Do you remember if they changed your fuel filter when they did the pump? This is a pretty standard procedure to do the both at the same time. I would definately change the filter if you are experiencing pressure problems.

Fuel injector

Sounds like a leaking injector. If you give some throttle input, does it start quicker?

The injector may be leaking flooding your engine.

Fuel Filters

In the last year, I have changed the fuel filter 5 times. Since that fixed the problem temporarily.

I used to think that the fuel pump should last more than 2 years. I drive probably 6-7K per year. I did not think that the fuel pump had such a short life.

I have not testing the fuel pressure or checked on the fuel injectors. I use Techron in the gas once a month. So did not even think that fuel injectors were bad. Did not cross my mind that they could be leaking.

How and where would one test the fuel pressure? Could someone show me a pic on where the regulator/meter would go to test the pressure?

Is it a DIY job to replace the fuel injectors? I have seen posts here recently saying that the injectors are around $600 for the whole kit.

Answer to Chris

Chris,

To answer your question -

Yes, if I give it some gas, it starts quicker. But in most cases, when I lift my leg off the gas pedal, it dies.

There is a schrader valve on the fuel rail with threads on it. It's on the opposite side of the engine as the air intake. This is where you screw on the tester. If you test the pressure you should be able to determine whether or not you have a leaky injector. If the pressure drops pretty quick then you may have a bad one.
