Squeaking D2

On my '00 D2 (180K) I have noticed a squeaking/chipping sound when accelerating, over 20mph, the sound dissipates when letting off the gas, hut comes back when at a contestant speed over 20. It almost sounds like a pulley/idler squeaking but in neutral @4k rpm no sound. Not sure if it is a hub, or cv joint. All differentials. transfer box, and transmission have had fluids replaced under 15k ago.

It is hard to pin point sound, but it does sound it is coming from front of vehicle. Do not know of any mechanics in area (North Bay Area). If possible would hope I could fix myself (weekend amateur mechanic, never too afraid to try type person)

Any suggestions on the squeaking?

XXXXXX2 on the driveshaft if it has not been re-built. Your looking at a very expensive time-bomb when that thing lets go.

Depending on your level of expertise, it's not a bad job.

Do it now or you'll be sorry later.

my 2000 disco makes what sounds like a whistling sound at highway speeds while under acceleration. let off the gas, no noise. it has new front drive shaft and both diffs and transfer case have been recently serviced. i think it's just a little gear-mesh noise somewhere. i've had it for over a year and am a 20 year veteran technician. am i worried about it? no. if it was grinding, then yes. but if you have an aging drive shaft, replace the hell out of it, cuz when it breaks, it can grenade your trans pan and kill that too.

Shortly after I bought my '04 it developed a vibration when letting off the gas at highway speeds. It was there but faint when under load and gone on a neutral throttle (no load). I replaced the driveshaft with a Tom Woods from Will Tillery (great service), but also found the front pinion nut loose while changing the driveshaft. The driveshaft didn't appear to ever have been off and the vehicle was one owner dealer serviced until I got it, so check that while you are at it.

:banghead:So I finally got a chance to get my disco on jack stands, the front drive shaft has no play except at the spline joint. So now I am wondering could be the hub? Any suggestions

I do have access to a replacement shift if need be. Though I doubt I have the expertise to replace it, (not the right tools.)

You probably won't be able to feel any play in the shaft with your hands. Pull it out and lock the center diff. Drive around and see if the noise goes away.
