Starting Problem

Problem: 97 disco inconsistently starts on 1st attempt. If doesn't start on 1st attempt, 2nd seems to always work. When 1st attempt fails, it sounds as if the starter isn't catching/lined up properly (tries to turn over, then makes that dreaded sound you hear when starting a truck that is already running).

Battery was checked today and is good. Starter is brand new as of a few months ago. Issue started a few weeks ago. Are shims available/needed?

The issue is very inconsistent, however, if I focus real hard and believe in land rover fairies, parking slightly down hill seems to prevent the issue almost always.

You may have a worn out starter , the return spring on the starter is getting weak.

You think the brand new starter is worn out after 2 months of use? I may have a spare somewhere... might pull it and switch it out.

Just pulled the starter... it looks fine (teeth and all). This one is in warranty so just called to get a new one - should be here by 6pm. From the small patch of the fly wheel i can see, the teeth look fine. If I put the truck in gear and roll it forward, that should turn the fly wheel around so I can see the other teeth... right?

hmm... this didn't work. Went ahead and installed the new starter. Cranked very fast. Drove it a bit and cranked it about 6 more times with no problem - I am not declaring it solved yet; another 100 smooth cranks and I'll start to trust it. So either it was the starter or the land rover fairies are playing a dirty trick on me.
