I have been looking for a set of steel wheels for my disco. Everyone seems to be around the same price. Does anyone know of any drastically cheap places?

Thanks

Garrett: What is the backspacing on the NATOs?

Andrew: Are those the American Racing wheels on their website?

not sure of the backspacing. have the NATOs on two of my trucks and the backspacing is same as stock.

i just like the NATOs because they are the beefiest out there. that and i like their looks. TReK Outfitters has some too, but i don't like how the certer hub does not fit snuggly over the axle flange. not sure about GCR's regarding this.
aren't GCRs made my American Racing? if so......another reason i would chose NATOs over them.

Definately NATOs over the American Racing wheels. I talked to a rep from American Racing and he said that all their steel wheels are now made overseas by Unique. He said the quality is poor and they don't even want to carry steel wheels, but the demand is still there and the profit is good on Taiwanese wheels. Not a stellar endorsement, really.

Hmm, doesn't sound good. Anyone have recommendation on a wheel w/ 2.5"+ back spacing?

I've used and abused wheels made by Unique for five years now, and can't say anything but good words about them. Those are not $30 a pop AR Wagon Wheels - much better and tougher in design (although, I haven't AR wagon wheels fail on my jeep, either).
(assuming these - are the wheels we're talking about)

I sold my 15x8's and went to the factory allows, and I wish I had not. I want a steel wheel, 15x8 with 3.5" or so back spacing, for a wider foot print.

i run one set of NATOs with 265/75s and other sets of NATOs with 235/85s. not sure what i like better as far as looks. and have yet to try the 235 setup on the trails.

not a big fan of the offset look. wider won't help you out in most cases.

you sure you need your wheels to stick out that much?

Well, not 'sure' about anything when it comes to Rovers lifted beyond what they were probably designed for. But I'm running 285/75s w/ about a 4" lift & they are pretty skinny. My thought is that offset wheels will give me a bit more stability. Some previous posts have confirmed this but apparently there is some disagreement on whether this makes a difference. It's intuitive that if your stance is wider, you will have more stability (all things equal) than if your stance was more narrow. But intuitive is not always right and like many things off-road, this one comes down to a bunch of different opinions. But Ho, I'm interested in yours. Thoughs?

I think that it has to do with just how much width till it really makes a serious difference. Low center of gravity and a wide track is really the best but, in a Disco there really is only so much you can do before you are wasting your time on the truck in my opinion.. Not that my opinion matters much. Having said that I have the GCR rims but, I bought them more to get my turning radius back then widening the track of the truck. But, every little bit helps I guess. Although I am looking for other options with the same back spacing that won't break the bank cause it appears that I have bent the center sections a little bit. Tires still balance OK but, they do wobble a just a wee little bit. Of course that could have also been the imperfections of the Interco Truxus tires. I'm not sure as I haven't had them re-balanced lately but, I'll check again when I do a little closer to find out for sure if it is the rim or the tire or maybe just the machine that was used.

They are AR wheels. I went with them cause I wanted to go a little wider in the stance and they were cheap. I'm sure they are not as strong as NATO wheels but most people who use them like them. Marc Oliveras told me about them and he does a lot of hard core stuff in Moab with his. ;)

seems like you are alraedy set on the wider stance deal.
let's do a little mental exercise... with the wheels sticking out that much, what do you think the "side effects" / downside would be?

British Pacific has the NATO wheel listed at $89. Seems a little steep. I bet if you called them the price may be a bit lower.

Dunno--that's why I come here & ask folks who have 'em. I don't want to guess wrong & have it cost me on the trail. Again, your thoughts/advice welcome.
