Steering box or CV Joint?

I'm hearing a knocking noise from the front end of my 1998 Discovery when I have the wheels in a tight turn. The knocking only happens when I am moving so I suspect it might be a CV joint. But I have never had a CV joint go bad so I don't really know if it is that or the steering box. Anyone want to speculate?

First, check if you have any oil or lube in the swivel balls. I had a nearly dry CV joint in a truck I bought - pulled the joint out, cleaned and inspected it, put it back and added swivel lube. It is still there, about 70k mi later.

Otherwise, replace it before it breaks. It's a bitch to fish out razor-sharp shards of whatever part breaks from the narrow space between inner and outer ball surfaces.

If it's a continuous knock then cv joint, if it only happens a couple times then you may have worn steering or suspension components
