Steering Damper in a IIa

I want to put a damper on my SIIa by fab'ing some mount points on the chasis and drag link. I have a used one off of my DII, and I'm thinking about using it for a bit (until I buy a new one).

My thought is that a Disco style one might be easier to source (cheaper) in the long run... and I have one that's free laying around...

Is there a difference in the damping rate between dampers made for a Defender / Series and a Disco, or power v.s. non-power steering?

Obviously different makes will have different rates, but it's not like you specify a dampning rate when you buy them.

One drawback I can see is if I need to replace my drag link, I will have to re-fab the mounting tab as opposed to buying one with the tab already attached (due to the different post v.s. through-bolt mounting style).

Any thoughts? Am I over analyzing this?

Check the front spring perch on the right side - you may have 1/2 of the mounting hardware already there. Some very late IIa's had an eye built into the frame near the spring. Certainly all the Series III's did. The other end of the damper clamps to the tie rod, and if you buy a new one, that hardware comes with it. I probably have several of these bits (new) in the garage. Of course, the problem is *finding* them.

Cheers

I can't remember the PN, but one for a IH Scout I think fit the series. I believe that's what AB (or maybe Zagata 4WD) was selling for them in the 70's. I think I got mine from Zagata actually.
