Hi All, on my '99 D1 the steering gear box went toast the other day. So essentially I have a free rotating steering and the wheels don't move.
So my question, do I have to replace the power steering pump too? I've ordered a reman'd steering box but no sure if I should go ahead and get a new pump too.
The only symptoms I have seen with the power steering are in idle I have to put a lot of effort to turn the wheels. Solution, accelerate (rev up the engine) to assist in turning. One of the techs mentioned that when I do install a new steering box and if the power steering pump was bad I might re-cirulate metal shavings from the steering box into the pump.
Any ideas on whether I should replace the pump too? Thx.-PGK
