So I'm trying to add a PAC-SWI-PS to my Pioneer headunit. I install everything according to the instructions. When it came to hooking up the wire that actually controls things, I couldn't find the wire they referred to in the instructions. I checked RAVE and gave it my best shot. With in 15 mins, the unit was smoking and I quickly disconected everything. I never got it to work. what wire am I supposed to use? I use a red/grey wire. They refer to a grey/red wire. when it was all hooked up, before I noticed the smoke, it was raising the volume on its own and freaking out. What happened and what should I do??

I installed a PAC steering wheel controller in my disco too, only for an eclipse stereo. I had a hard time getting it to work properly so I had a friend at a stereo shop help me out. He came out, made sure all the wires were hooked up right (except for the one odd ball) then he touched that wire to the open wires in the truck wire harness and tried the steering wheel buttons until the light on the PAC unit lit up. if I get a chance this week to take out the stereo, i'll snap some pics and give you the wire location. Good luck.

I bought the alpine specific one, and it took me more time to program the thing than it did to install it. The directions aren't great. But how much more than:

Connect the SWI-JACK 's White wire to Gray/Red. Connect Gray/Black to ground. If you are using an aftermarket wire harness that has a blue loop wire from the factory Gray/Red to a Red/Black wire, remove the loop from the connector.

do you really need?

where's the gray/red wire?? where's the black grey wire? The first line says to connect ground to black ground wire? so I am actually supposed to connect to a gray/black wire? I'm no audio guru but it's a little confusing.

P.S. I am using an aftermarket harness and there IS a blue loop wire but it doesn't go to the wires mentioned

Ok, I took some quick photos of my setup. The wire in question is on pin #2 of the grey socket. I'm pretty colorblind but it is either tan/black stripe or kinda olive green/black stripe. You can identify it by the crimp in it from one of those wire piggy back crimps. What I did was remove the solid blue wire from its original location in the aftermarket harness and place it matching up with pin #2 and connected it to the same ground called for in the PAC directions. The directions are horrible. I had to call crutchfield a few times to get this done. The problem was the gound. It has to be hooked up to the ground for the steering wheel controls, not any ground will do. You will find that gray/black wire on the main harness attached to the vehicle, not the aftermarket harness, it may be covered with black tape so you'll have to peel it back a bit. The harness does not come out from the dash that much but cut it in two and strip the end still attached to the vehicle harness. Attach the white wire accourding to the instructions. The Red wire I tapped from power going to the head unit. I had to cut the blue loop wire anyway to use for an amp turn. I think in all I attached 4 wires not 3 but after forcing the head unit in it has not popped out.
I got the Pioneer 710BT the backlight is not as bad as I thought it would be, all the factory steering wheel controls work. I have to do something about all that rattling with the extra bass.

P.S. The wire may look more brown(think light coffe brown) than gray, so unwrap some fo the black tape for a better color identity.

Ok, found BOTH wires. Black and Grey as in this thread (see pics), #2 on the car's harness (has to be grounded): https://plus.google.com/photos/11781...786?banner=pwa
And number 3 on the factory harness, different row, next. That one connects to the white wire.
This leaves you with power (black and red) and blue / yellow to the blue / yellow on the aftermarket unit, unless it has a jack in it... Now, programming this thingie is something else. So far could not figure it out...
