Hi,

I recently replaced my stepper motor and I still get an check engine light with code 48.
I reset by upluging the ECU and it will clear it for a day or two but it will come on again.

Anybody know what I can further do.

This is the proper way to clear a code:

Clearing the display
1. Switch ignition on.
2. Disconnect serial link mating plug, wait 5 seconds, then reconnect.
3. Switch ignition off, wait for main relay to drop out.
4.Switch ignition on. The display should now be reset. If there are other faults, the next one will be displayed. Otherwise the display will be black.
5. If there is more than one fault repeat steps 1 to 4, to clear each fault until the display is blank.

Code 48.

It always amazes me that the solution to a Check engine light is to erase it, and not address the problem.

Code 48 happens when the computer is trying to get the engine to a specific idle speed.

So, for whatever reason, your cars engine will not idle at the speed the computer wants.

Likely your base idle is off, which is a easy adjustment, but you may have a vacuum leak, or other things.

Also, on 94-95, the underhood fuse block has a fuse marked "fuel Injectors"

Unplugging that fuse will clear the codes.....And no muss withthe radio code.

thanks Chris. I figured out that the base idle was off. It was adjusted by somone who thought they could adjust it. I have the LR procedure but i don't have an electronic RPMand i don't knowi if its the MFI setting or the base idle setting. set 665 to 735rpm if controlled by the MFI. Then it says base idle should 525rpm +-25.

What should it idle at?

By the way don't get me wrong, i only want to know how to clear after i trouble shoot the problem.

thanks

Base idle Setting preceedure.

There is a hose about1 inch think between the Stepper motor housing and the throttle area.

Sqeeze that hose shut with a visegrip. THe truck should bearly idle.

What you did here is cut off the air supply to the stepper motor. It is idling on the base idle bypass.

Hook up a tach(Sears $40, works good)

With the hose sqeezed, turn the allen screwon top of the plenium untill the idle speed drops of 525 -+25. 525 is best though. 14 cux is FUSSY!

After its idling at 525 (It will bearly run) Release the vise grip.

THe revs will go up quite a bit, as the stepper motor is fully open(The computer was trying to adjsut idle with it) but will come back down slowly, as the computer adjusts itself

Clear codes if needed.

There you go.

I dont want to brag.

I'm kind of Cheating.

I was a factory trained Master tech for Land Rover.
Went to all the classes, and fixest them all day for money. :)

I got out then series 2 came out. My last class was the new product orientation.

Now, I sit in a cube. :)

Thanks again. The truck also starts great at sub-zero temps. I am just pissed off at the dealer. They never told me about the recall and I specifically asked when I bought it 5 yrs ago. They could have saved lots of headaches.
