Stepper motor, i think...

I read a good deal of posts about bad idle and stepper motor. I am hoping that the experts can chime in to say yeah or nay on the verdict of replacing the stepper motor.

First thing in the A.M. went to start the truck. Acted like a low power battery, and sounded like a bad battery. Truck started and ran fine.
Drove it (warmed it up completely), reached my destination and shut it down.
Went back to it 30 min later and it will turn over but won't start. Feathered the gas and it still wouldn't start. Worked the throttle cable from inside the engine compartment and was able to get it to start, but it will not hold idle.

Drives fine.
Dies if I try to go back to idle, BUT, now I am able to start it from inside the cabin.

Took it to an independant mech. All tests show OK, feul pressure is good. He is telling me to go to the Stealership to have it tested.

Thanks for any help

How did it idle before this happened? If it ideld OK Try cleaning the stepper first and check all of your vac. lines, if the idle was rough of very low, I'd go after the stepper. On thing on my D1 95 was the Fuel cap, it would idle when cold but when you reached operating temp it would hunt for idle. Got a new cap and things are good.

I had a the same situation happen to me last summer. It took a few weeks for some experienced LR mechs to finally find out it was only the fuel pump relay failing (sometimes). We changed out both the fuel pump and EFI relays and it hasent happened since. Its a cheap fix if it works for you.
It started out only happening a couple of times but as time went it happened more frequently.
Hope this helps.

No it is more of a PEACH than a GEM :D
What is GEMS?

:)
96-99 Series one use GEMS Fuel Injection. These are 4.0 engines with Black valve covers.
94-95 are 14CUX engines with 3.9 engines. These have grey valve covers.

Mine is 3.9l but it still may be the relays.
Good luck

nope it's a '98. the truck is not at my place right now. but i thought it was odd when i first noticed it. looks like the covers on my RRC.
when i get to moving the truck down to MD i will snap a pic. are the valve covers painted black or is it some other kind of application?
