Strange idle after winch install

Sorry for the long post... A few days ago, I finished my bumper and installed a SW EP9.0 - After connecting the winch to the battery, I noticed the truck began to idle strangely. At first, it was idling high, which made it hell stopping at red lights. Then it began to idle low; it was to the point that when I stopped, it felt like the truck was going to die, yet it never did. Well, I used the winch that evening and everything was fine - it pulled great! Drove the truck some more that night and the next day. Later, I went to the store and when I came out to crank the truck, it almost sounded like it was trying to start for just a fraction of a second, then everything went dead. All fuses were fine. Battery was reading 12.84 v at the time. If I put the key in the ignition with the doors open, it would chime normally. However if I turned the key to start the truck nothing would happen (not even dash lights). The interior lights did not work either, and if I tried to turn on the lights while the door was open, the chiming stopped. So I disconnected the winch from the battery and reconnected the negative lead, and the truck cranked up just fine like nothing happened. After I got back to the safety of my own driveway, I reconnected the winch, and everything was fine. The alternator was putting out 13.77 v and the battery was charging. All of the winch cables show to be receiving good grounds. Every once in a while, the truck idles low. Any explanations or experience with this?

Tim, didn't you experience something like this?

Well if you really want to know....

I had a starter shear off the nose cone which I replaced no big deal. Flash two weeks forward suddenly in the grocery store parking lot the Rover is fine hit the key instant darkness. It makes no sense. I pull the starter have it tested and the battery, both good. I then re-install the starter and she fires up and runs fine, I'm confused but happy figuring I must have had a loose connection. Well 3 days later she does it again. I'm under the hood giggling cables and see a huge shower of sparks. I follow the flashing lights so to speak to find that the wire clamp had rusted through allowing the starter power lead to drop between the frame and motor mount where it chaffed through and was arking out. Fixed the lead re-secured it and now life is good again.
