Strange idle issue

Hi all,

I have a 1996 D1 SE7 5sp that has something strange going on with its idle since it has gotten cold outside. I searched through the forum for the issue but only found one vauge reference that seems similar to what I am experiencing. As such, I wanted to get some more information from the experts...

A couple of times when I have started the Disco it idles at about 950-1000RPM while I let it warm up. When I rev the engine or drive it runs great when I am pressing on the gas, but when I stop the idle drops to normal, revs up to about 2k for a few seconds, and then drops down to normal again.

The first time this happened was on a day when the Disco had been sitting for a couple of weeks since I had started it. When starting it the battery (which tests fine along with the charging system which is putting out +14V) seemed weak and took a while to get the engine to start. After I experienced the issue with the idle I checked the vacuum lines and replaced one that seemed a little kinked. I also put the battery on a charger. Up until today (about a month later, it has been fine). Today, after not running the Disco for a 4 or 5 days the same thing happened all around. The battery seemed weak and the idle was erratic.

In my searching for this issue in the forums I found one reference suggesting a similar occurrence that was due to having a low charge on the battery. This explanation seems to fit, as both times the battery seemed very weak when trying to start the engine. Does this seem like a reasonable explanation to what I am experiencing, or would you suggest I look toward a different solution to my problem?

I know there is something draining my battery when it sits. I have not had the time to try to track that down yet.
