Just had the same thing happen to me in an '02. The stealer replaced the brake light switch. It wasn't activating the brake lights which in turn wasn't letting me shift out of park b/c of the shift-lock feature. Hope this helps.

Curtis, thanks for the quick responce. I am hoping it is something easy. How much did the stealership charge you?

Before going through all that:

Reach up in front of the underdash cover RIGHT beside the brake pedal & feel around rearward for the switch. It takes a limber arm! (You can pull the 3 plastic rivets & drop that panel if you want to look at it.) It sticks straight back and has a vacuum line just below a 2 wire connector, and it's sort of long. Push the brake pedal slightly with one hand & try to turn the switch clockwise to lock it into its bracket. It shouldn't take much force, so don't break it. While still holding the pedal forward, find the button of the switch that rides on the pedal arm. Pull that button FIRMLY forward until you hear at least 3 clicks, then release the pedal and listen for clicks as it auto-adjusts itself.

Your brake lights & shift interlock should work for at least a couple of pedal cycles - enough to get you out of Park & rolling home.

It was a warranty repair, so i don't know how much. I would post a new thread and ask if anyone knows how to fix it. I wouldn't think it would be that hard, but I have no clue.

Same thing happened to me about 4 months ago. Worse thing was we were moving, had to be out on Saturday and here my Rover is stuck in the drive on Friday afternoon. I pulled the switch and jumped the connections to get it in gear, no brake lights but at least I got it to the new house.

The part I believe was around $40 and fixing it amounted to no more than removing the old switch and installing the new one. It is self adjusting, at least on my ?00 DII. Good luck.

Thanks for all the help. It was exactly what you all said. I am now the proud owner of a new brake light switch.

Just a little a bit of advice for everyone who is on this site, GET A SPARE. In the last couple of weeks more than a couple people have had this problem. It's an inexpensive part and would be a good thing to keep in the glove box.

I agree...
I had this problem a few weeks ago...Mine would stick in park at different times.
My dealer is three hours away so really not convenient for me to say the least.
Just hope it never happens again but better to be safe than sorry!
