Could this be attributed to using 87 octane fuel on an regular basis? I, reluctantly, must admit to doing so.....

"I still have the rapid popping noise (backfire) at heavy acceleration at around 2500 rpm. 48 was the only code that was thrown."

Sounds like a cam. Could be an MAF if it is really out of wack but that would throw a code in my experience.

Stupid question but what is a MAF?

The problems people have had with 96/97s are entirely different to the 95s which in some ways is the best year for DIY mechanics. What you've done with the stepper is clearly a step (sorry) in the right direction. If you are popping as in backfiring, then excess fuel is going down the exhaust. You say the car has started poorly as well. Check the condition of the battery and alternator. Popping and spluttering are often caused by weak electrical power
If those are ok, Test the wires, plugs and coil condition.

Having similar problems

I have virtually the same symptoms. I have a 1996 Disco 4.0. Your popping sounds like what mine does after I spray the engine at the car wash. I sprayed under the hood (which is kind of stupid anyway) it barely started and when did it was sputtering for about 20 minutes. I had to sit at the car wash and wait until it dried out.
My main problem is that I have trouble at times under acceleration. It will get around 3-4k RPMs and just flatten out. If I floor it it just stops accelerating and the tach stays right there. When I let off and the RPMs drop back it continues on unless I get the RPMs back into the 3k range. When I go to start the truck, most of the time it takes several seconds of the engine turning over for it to start up. I used to smell raw gas at this time which was kind of scary. I got the fuel tank replacement the other week and the raw gas smell has gone away but it still stumbles and is hard to start. What is wierd is that neither of these symptoms are always present. Sometimes, it will crank right up and I can drive it and it will run perfect. Then if I stop at the store, try to start it and the symptoms are back. I have also replaced the plugs, wires, catalytic converters, fuel filter, oxygen sensors. I did Seafoam twice in the gas tank and once through the vacuum line and once in the crankcase to try to clean out and carbon deposits. I replaced the battery and some other things I can't recall right now.
I took it into the shop yesterday and my mechanic told me there was a cam or crank shaft position sensor code, a random misfire code and some sort of ignition module code. He is leaning towad the position sensor. I can't remember if he said cam or crank (sorry). I'll let you know if we get it figured out. It may help you.

Jwarner,

Please let me know what you find out, I am having the same problems on my 96 disco. Changed out the coil packs, fuel filter, had a fuel tank replacement, took it to Meineke to check the codes, same codes

I'm still waiting for the parts from Nathan Crabtree. I went ahead and picked up my truck from the shop and it has been running pretty good. I haven't noticed the acceleration problem but once since Friday (today is Wednesday). Nathan said that it is rare for the cam position sensor to go bad. When I described the symptoms to him he said that it sounded like that might just be the problem. I won't know for sure until later. I'm also replacing the fan clutch because I had a problem with overheating when it was allowed to idle in the heat (especially with the A/C on).
