Order an OEM alternator. It comes from the same Italian manufacturer who supply LR, Magnetti Marelli.

DO NOT...I repeat DO NOT buy a rebuild from Bosch. I went through 4 in one month. The lase one caught on fire in a parking lot. They (Bosch) finally replaced it with a Magtet Murelli, which has lasted for the past 5 years with no problems.

I would fork out the dough and buy new.

Sorry to Hi-Jack the thread but does anyone know about how long the factory Alt will last? I have about 80K miles on the clock and I need to take a bit of a road trip this weekend (about 450 miles to and 450 from). The alt tests fine (13.8V) ..But I just remember the last road trip I took in a j*** with a sort of lame alt it died on me as soon as I got to the destination. Any thoughts guys? Melissa 1998 D1

RoverChic, I wouldn't give it a second thought. Or else add a whole list of other things to worry about. ;)
I have about 170k on my '95 with the original alt, I think, but know I haven't replaced it since I bought it with about 95k on the clock.

Melissa, if you got worries about it - just borrow battery from your daily car for that trip. And fully charge it before going on trip. That way you got power backup in case of failed alternator that will get you home.

How long do you think you can drive on a fully charged battery with a failed alternator? Definately not 450 miles. It may get you out of the middle of nowhere but won't get you home.
