Suggestions for rebuilding Front Axle

Seeking some advice and opinion..

If you were going to rebuild your front axle (in two different projects and time intervals entirely due to potential cost), and you were starting with the front right or passenger side of the vehicle because there is internal mechanical failure (likely CV) what else would you replace or repair while you had the truck up on the lift?

I know I need a swivel and the top and bottom bearing for it as well as a CV but what else should I plan to order?

What gaskets, seals, shims, bearings, bushings etc should I have on hand for this project?

I would rather not have to come back and work on this part of the vehicle again in the near future because I skipped a step or cheaped out on something simple so what might you suggest I replace now and what can be re-used? And are there any other mechanical parts I should attend to while the front end is disassembled?

The calipers, rotor's, pads and tires were just replaced in March and the front axle is currently running with a RRC diff and spline.

If budget permits I would swap that back to a Discovery Diff with 24 spline and repair and rebuild the front driver's side as well as it has a minor leak and a pitted swivel but something tells me this is going to get quite expensive if I try to tackle the entire project at once and after just investing in a master cylinder, rotors, calipers, pads, tires, and more in March I am working with a budget of hopefully under $1000 this time around..

I suppose replacing the axle assembly is an option but what can you really know about a used axle assembly other than it may look like the swivel balls don't leak?

Thanks for your time, advice, opinion and suggestion..

Namaste,

I would do as you have suggested and address the shims, seals, bearings and bushings. Pitting is an issue best dealt with by replacing the swivels with new/used ones.

Brakes can be done any time, it is pulling the stub axles, axle, swivel housing and CVs that is the pain.
