So, the front sunroof is pretty F'ed up. The problem is that it won't retract all the way and it sounds as if the motor's gearbox has some missing teeth as it is popping and binding just short of closing up. Didnt get a chance to really pull the headliner and rip it all apart to look at it but I'm wondering what a repair including a used but good condition motor and some rails would cost me in parts. Please no suggestions on siliconing it together  ...I'd like to make it functional again.

Thanks,

Do you mean it only takes less than an hour to drop the headliner??? I was worried it was going to be long because I have to clean my drains up there. At least it's not so intimidating now!

Thanks :)

To remove and refit the motor takes less than 1 hour. You drop the plastic overhead storage piece and the motor is right there. There's no need to drop the headliner from the windscreen back. Now the drains are another thing.

You can clean your drains with a long wire from the front corners of you sunroof while it is open.

On my D2 you can also locate the bottoms of the drains if you pull the rear taillights out(rear roof only).

I've also got 4 low miler roof assemblies in stock. $80 plus shipping each

I've never looked for the bottoms of the front roof but I'm pretty sure they are behind the inner fender trim.

Thakns for the info guys...on the road for the next 2 weeks, will look at it when I get back and will let ya know what I need...I dropped the plastic mapholder/switch board from the roof and I couldn't budge the motor with a star drive and a 3/8" ratchet, thus my theory that the gears were stripped in the motor; anyone know if the gears are plastic or metal in there? I'm pretty sure I know the answer but just checking! The rails were already kinda fubar'd in the first place but it seems the motor also just kicked it...I'll get back to ya'll when I get back to Hotlanta.

Are you saying the screws came out but the motor would not move? If it's bound up on the drive shaft use an Allan wrench to actuate the motor to free it up. Then get the handle actuator and forget the motors.

negative, removed the plastic to see if I could manually retract the sunroof using the star/allen drive on the outside of the motor's gearbox and it was bound up pretty tightly, I couldn't move the roof at all....I had to go on a trip and didnt have too much time to actually drop the liner and look at both sunroofs as they're both giving me trouble, but the rear one is currenly closed. Just trying to get the front one fixed up so I can actually use it once in a while....and consequently keep rain out!

This has happened to me too. I've put an Allan wrench in the center of the gearbox and used pliers to turn it...it can be really tough to turn it. I dropped the motor with the 3 screws, took it apart and lubed it up and reinstalled it. It still sticks now and then. Those handles are looking better all the time. Just screw it on and hand crank it; throw away the motor.
