Super extra bad MPG

I have a 1995 Discovery. It is getting really poor MPG, like 5-6MPG. It does have 31" Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs, and 4.10 gears, and a roof rack, but that should not make it this bad.

It has new plugs, wires, and distributor cap. The air filter is a little dirty, but not terrible. All fluids are recent and stock spec - nothing special or heavy in the diffs, for example.

It has 110k miles on it.

Without OBD2, can't plug in any scanners as far as I am aware unless I get some Rover specific tools.

Any ideas?

Tom

I don't know about diag tools for that, but my suspicion would be that it's staying in open loop and running pig rich all the time. Potentially a bad O2 sensor but that's hardly the only thing that could keep it in open loop.

make sure the fuel regulator vac line is hooked up, no vac leaks or holes in the intake hose, then see if the mechanical advance in the distributor is locked up

Get Rovergauge. Its cheap and simple.

Dude. I never knew this existed. Thanks.

Is this the correct cable? It all says RRC but assuming the same with the 95 Discovery.

Yeah. 5-6 mpg is horrible for a Disco 1. I was happy getting to 18-22 mpg on my old ‘98 V8 D1.
Lot better than what I get now with my current D2 V8 at 11-14mpg. :(

Looks like the right cable.

I made my own, with a generic connector, that I soldered onto the connections in the original plug. Whatever you are comfortable with though - that cable isn't too badly priced, considering you need to buy the FTDI cable and the resistor anyway.

Rovergauge shows everything the ECU needs to see, and because it's reported FROM the ECU, it shows what's reading out of range.

My Disco is RHD, but the connector was hanging under the dash, below the steering column.
