Real quick guys been pondering it, and now I am set I really want to swap to 4.11's ..... Really dont want to drop on the lockers yet but I know I should so here it is.......

Best place to find complete 3rd members w/ 4.11's and detroit in rear???

Best place to find complete 3rd member for front w/ trutrac????

Or Best place for just regular old 4.11 3rd members w/ no lockers???

Thanks,

Matt

i'm in the same situation myself and after much research there really isn't many options out there. GBR(Great Basin Rovers) is about your only option for complete replacement 3rds geared and locked or just geared.

it sucks because they are super pricey......but i guess you gotta pay to play!!

Right but I did hear it is a little cheaper to re-gear the transfer case and it has the same benefits.... really the only thing I am trying to benifit is getting a better acceleration on hwy cause it is mainly my daily driver...also want to go up a size to 265-75-16 and just want to keep a decent acceleration with those as well...so the whole re-gear the transfer case is this true?

Why mess with the only decent piece of driveline in the truck? I'd replace that flimsy 2 pinion carrier first, especially if you are going up a tire size. Then regear. In my experience, 4.11's are better with 33's and up, but look into 3.91's if you can find them. The stock 4.0, LT230 with 3.91's and 32/33's is perfect. They are slightly stronger, your engine wont be that busy, and you'll still get a nice boost in acceleration. Yes it's gonna be twice the price of swapping out the stock ratio, but you'll have a much better solution.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with installing lower hi-range gears into LT230.
I don't buy into GBR Bill's theory about thicker ring gears having stronger teeth.

I agree as well, but you are still left with a shitty 2 pinion carrier, along with a host of other things that will need to be addressed eventually. Just seems to me like a lot of expense for a slight improvement in acceleration when it can be better applied elsewhere...

Now can I get just the 2 pinion pice or do I have to swap out entire 3rd members and if I can get just the gears I should be able to pull the 3rd members and send them to a driveline shop to have them installed correct?

You can get just the gears.. I think they were are $400 per axle last time I checked.. then just pull the thirds and get a driveline shop to do the install.

There's a difference between swapping a TT or Detroit instead of stock carrier (something a reasonable person can pull off safely in a couple of hours) and swapping ring and pinion (which is beyond most shadetree mechanics' abilities).

greatbasinrovers.com and ashcrofttransmissions.co.uk have gears... I found GBR to be the cheaper of the two when all added up.

If you get a TT or a Detroit, you don't have to touch the gears to install them... it's a lot easier. But what are you looking to accomplish? Lower gearing, or better traction, or both? Don't forget if you go with a detroit or ARB locker you should really also upgrade your half shafts. the most popular combos are generally;

Dual TT's no Axle upgrade
TT Front, Detroit Rear w/ Rear HD Axle
ARB Front, Detroit Rear, HD both axles
Dual ARB's, HD both axles

As for 4.11's... what size tires are you running? 33-35's are a lot nicer w/ 4.11's.

Really just Lower gearing....would like to increase acceleration and just get lower gearing in general...the 4.0 is just really under powered for the set up that its in....

Damn, if a 4.0 is underpowered in Florida, how do we get by in the mountains?

that's what i'm thinking. you just have to get used to the fact your not driving a fast car. the DII is a rolling pig, no way around that!

i've been wondering this same thing. i'm about to put on some 255/85/16 tires and feel like it's gonna be a dog, even with the 4.6... guess gears will end up coming before a winch.

i'm running 285s with the 4.0 and stock gears. it's not that bad. gas mileage is the worst part of the set up.

don't get me wrong gears/lockers are on the list.....

yeaah, yeah. i'll want them mainly for regaining some gas mileage. it might be six months or longer before i get the gears though.. gotta do it right. i don't drive/accelerate fast, but it'd be nice to have the specs equal to stock again.

hey guys the only thing im concerned with is getting those 265's to clean themseleves when running through the mud... if they spin to slow I might as well have more fun crossing by foot

Simply a budget issue that says if you are going to crack those diffs for gears, might as well add better traction while the diff is cracked open.
265s may also show the weakness in that standard carrier as stated above.

I did the opposite, traction ahead of gearing, but I had limited funds enough for TTs, no gears.

That damn 4.0L will be fine in the mudd dude, believe me, just fine. Join the boys this Sat @ 3PM on Hwy 50 @ Winn Dixie parking lot. They are going into Richloam and there will be plenty of water and mudd so you can see that torque-y 4.0L work.
