So, after living with my crunching gearbox for almost a year I finally decided to do something about it. Hopped on Pelican Parts website and ordered up a gallon of Swepco 212 gear oil. This is the stuff that Porsche guys claim saves their ancient transmission from needing a rebuild. I went with the thick stuff and, at 80W-140, it certainly is that. It also has a ton of Moly additive in there as well.
Is it expensive? Yes. Outrageously so. And it isn't even synthetic. They use dino base stock. I was skeptical.
So how does it work? In short, no more crunch. If I hurry a shift I'll still get a bit of a "snick", but it really made a HUGE improvement. Cold shifts are just fine with the thicker oil, too. I highly recomment the stuff. Even at nearly $75/gallon.
