Had a NF 6-7 man tent for a couple years now and i like it. It is pretty big set up. Got 3 internal compartments and a vesibule as well. Got it from Hudson Trail Outfitters for 300 - 400 if i remember correctly.

I have worked in the outdoor industry for many years, as a mountaineering guide, gear designer, and retail store manager. For the application you're looking for with lots of people and a dog I think you would find a Hilleberg tent to be the best match. They make some very roomy tents, and I've had great luck with them on expeditions. Some models have enormous vestibules so you can store gear, shoes, wet dogs, misbehaving children, etc. in the shelter but not crawling all over your sleeping bags.

You can even get a groundsheet that covers the inside of the vestibule, which is great for snowy conditions. These things aren't the cheapest, but they last forever, are handmade in Europe, and the warranty/customer support are great. Don't waste your time on anything with the Lowest Common Denominator (REI) label on it.

If you want to talk to some folks who use these tents a lot and know them well, call up anyone at Feathered Friends in Seattle (206 292 2210).

Here is a link to a model that might be a good size for you.

Yeah, the Hilleberg is really the best out there, I got the Nallo 3 GT, which can fit 2 dogs in the vestibule as shown in the pic. It can set up different doors at the vestibule, or totally roll up the vestibule. And it is around 6 lbs. It is really not cheap, I think it is the most expensive out there, but I have to buy this as I got dogs with me and I do hike a bit, so weight does really matter. But in a way, if weight is not concern, get a family tent this just overkill in your application, and too expensive. But the Hilleberg is really first class stuff, at the connection point, the material is folded to double the layer, and sew by 2 line of threads, also the extra sewing on stress point, and comes with a extra pole section in case you breaks it.
