Hi! I have a leaky swivel pin housing, so I've got a seal and I am going to change it. What's the best way to do it? I've heard that swivel pin housing can be removed including shaft to replace seal. Does anyone have an advice? It's a LR Disco 1 with ABS.

Thanks a lot!

Are you talking about the swivel seal or swivel pin? If swivel pin you have a upper and lower and it's a o-ring type seal.

edit: if it's your swivel pin remove your brake caliper and the clip holding the brake line, then two bolts holding the swivel pin in.

look at the link for swivel oil seal replacement, you should invest in a manual or Rave cd, they help alot.

If you are talking about the large seal on the ball then yes you can do it that way. Remove the wheel, brake caliper, and steering link(s) first. Then remove the bolts holding the swivel ball to the axle and pull the whole assembly out. It is going to be heavy so recruit some help or have some sort of wheeled platform ready. Then you can r&r the seal pretty easily.

Or you can take it apart the "normal" way which gives you a chance to repack your wheel bearings, inspect/relube the CV joint, set the swivel pin preload, and check/replace the other seals that are in there. I would go this route unless you know for sure everything else in there is ok. It is more work but you get peace of mind knowing all of the internals are ok.

Thanks for advice!

I have changed wheel bearings, so I checked everything is ok in the hub. I changed oil on swivel housing (keep the level). I've never disassembled swivel housing. Is it necessary lubricate the CV joint priodically????

Thanks again!

Yes, you should change the lube periodically. I forget the service schedule for it. If it's grease, you really have to take it apart to do it. If it's 90wt and you have the swivel housings with a drain, you can drain and refill. If it's leaking I'm guessing you have oil in it.
Some people replace the large seal by removing the old one with everything in place, cutting it and taking it off. The very carefully cutting through in one spot on the new one, twisting it some so you can get it over the small part of the swivel ball and installing it with the cut at the very top, gooping it with something like permatex. I personally haven't tried it that way, but the people who have say they don't have any problems with leaks, which sounds reasonable. YMMV

I have never pulled my springs off of my seals. I just got done with my second ball replacment. If you take your time and dont cut corners these things will last.

Also you really should do it the long way so you can check everything out in there. I have used the one shot grease in both of my D1s. They havent leaked one drop. I did my first truck three and half years ago.
