I understand the idea behind the high-temp line but I wonder how many people have actually melted their rope via the winch drum and it's brake.

I like the x-line!

That is a great question and I do not have the answer for you. We all know There are guys running low temp line when they should have Hi. With no problems. I would not recomend it

I am intersted in the largest one that will fit in my warn 9500 winch.

Is thsi stuff the best synthetic line to buy?

How does it handle the snowy muddy conditions?

Can you get it with the protective sheath over it?

Ooh yes it is the best!
Snow and mud are fine. You should clean it off it it full of mud like any other strap/rope.
Just snow is no problem.
There is a protective cover for the last foot

you can end splice vectran or technora to the end of [1st row spool] your amsteel. Its very easy. You should learn how to splice this stuff for field repairs anywho. If you are worried about uv buy some flat rope or tubing from REI or the likes long enough to cover the last row of line on your drum. [makes good chafe guard as well]
